This question probably falls under the "shutting the door after the horse has left the barn" category since I've already done it, but I'll ask anyways:
If I remove my Business CD stereo deck for repair, do I need to disconnect he battery before reconnecting the deck to its wire harness?
Background
Last year I installed a DICE Mediabridge 1500 to add iPhone connectivity. If you're not familiar, this unit plugs into the CD changer wiring harness located in the trunk and emulates a CD changer while offering connectivity to an iPhone (among others) via USB or Bluetooth. With the Mediabridge installed, you can toggle inputs between stereo, CD and the Mediabridge.
The install went swimmingly and I've enjoyed using it lo these many months until the bracket that holds the volume knob onto the head unit of the stereo broke loose.
Taking courage from a lacking-in-detail how-to video on YouTube, I removed and disconnected the stereo from the console, opened it up and found that both screw bosses on the volume knob bracket had broken.
Figuring that you probably can't find replacement parts for the insides of BMW stereos, I decided I would have to make my own. So I measured the broken part, modeled it in CAD (with beefier screw bosses this time), and a machinist friend cut me a replacement out of polycarbonate.
Long story short, the head unit went back together without much issue. When I reconnected it to the car and powered it up, it worked just fine . . . except now when I switch inputs, my only choices are stereo and CD. It's like it doesn't recognize the Mediabridge.
I called up DICE tech support to see if they had any experience that would explain what was happening. They didn't, but told me if I installed the head unit without first disconnecting the battery, I may have "fried the CD changer memory" so that the head unit would no longer recognize a connected device.
Are they right? Was I supposed to have disconnected the battery? What can happen if you don't? Is it true that you can "fry the CD changer memory"?
I haven't been able to find any mention of that happening on Google, so I would appreciate any wisdom the E46 collective might have for me.
Thanks.
