In an M3, I'd take SMG over manual any day. I can say this because I've driven both. For non-M, I've no idea.
So, I guess the E60 M5 will not be fun to drive because it will only come with SMG III (7-speed)?ELotz101 said:It should not matter Manual all the way.
Manual= control of the car, more fun
SMG= stupid waste of money and all done by electronics and not fun to drive
no, it is limited to 1500 rpms or something like that so a manual drive can launch harder.dronell19 said:No one ever tested SMG before? It's FUN! Launch control? Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that help u launch that car faster than manual?
aaah, interesting. I'll get my friend to try out the launch control tomorrow, and I'll post the resulttim330i said:no, it is limited to 1500 rpms or something like that so a manual drive can launch harder.

I think 5000rpm (if you are talking about that easter egg thing), and it's bad for the engine...Kain said:But I think that the Euro version of SMG II launches at around 4000 rpm? :dunno:

ELotz101 said:If that is the only thing it comes with. BMW is already pushing far enough with the styling and i-drive. But it better come with a manual or else it will just be another Benz like vehicle. (Insane power but no manual offered). Might as well just turbo a caravan (joking). But seriously all you people that are too lazy or whatever to get a manual should really look at what you are missing.
P.S. mybada I was not kidding, IMO, the SMG is a waste of money and a good car. All the people that are about to say F1 cars use SMG, please stop yourself because last I checked these are not F1 cars.
Mine drops the clutch at about 4100 rpms.tim330i said:no, it is limited to 1500 rpms or something like that so a manual drive can launch harder.
Another Benz-like car?? WTF are you talking about?? A NA V10 engine with a 8500 rpm redline is Benz-like? Stiff suspension and awesome handling is Benz-like? Brakes that actually FEEL good is Benz-like? Plus, SMG and automatic transmissions are two TOTALLY different things.ELotz101 said:If that is the only thing it comes with. Don't worry bro, the new ///M will have a manual!rearviewmirror said:Although I'm not trying slam anyone on here or say my choice is right. But a lot people have the mentality that if something costs more it HAS to be better. It's not always the case. Sure SMG is derived from F1 racing, but as stated above, you're not an F1 driver and that is NO F1 car. The SMG is like driving an Automatic, face it. I chose the 6 speed M3 because it felt more like a drivers car, not a high HP car with an auto. I don't believe the M5 will not be offered without a Manual transmission, it's the heritage of M cars to be manual, BMW M GMBH will not break that tradition, they might in the US, but for the Euro market you can bet it will have a manual option.
The E60 M5 is coming with SMG III. It is 7-speed.certify said:I'm sure by the time the new ///M3 or ///M4 BMW will come up with a new SMGIII..![]()
