Fellow Fanatics:

I took the day today to go ahead and change the oil (was at about 8000 from last change) and decided to go ahead and change the transmission fluid too. I picked up 14 quarts (7 5W30 and 7 ATF) and went to town. I drained out the transmission pan, and then dropped it. The magnet was covered in metallic sludge (think Vaseline mixed with metal, it was pretty weird actually). I cleaned out the pan and drained all the fluid I could, and then went to reassembling everything. I was following a DIY from here, and so I filled the pan with my fluid pump and then started the car and put it in gear. Then I shut off the car and added more cold, then started the car and filled it with the engine running in neutral. :yikes:

I took my car for a test drive, and the shifts were significantly smoother and there is no other way to describe it than each gear felt "tighter" so I am pleased with the results and it wasnt too painful of a process and I would really recommend it. :thumbsup:

My question is this, the DIY suggested that 7 quarts would be good, and to just keep refilling until it overflowed. I only got about 5.75 quarts in the transmission. Is this enough fluid? I know it holds around 9 quarts including the torque converter, but I couldnt get any other fluid in the car (it kept overflowing out the fill hole) but I am now nervous that there isnt enough fluid in the transmission. Is there any way to check the level of the fluid, or is there a method for making sure I have enough fluid in there?

You should have had a container to catch all the old fluid IOT (in order to) measure it. Then you were to put in the exact same amount that came out.

When I did mine I got out approx 5 liters. But when I put in the new fluid with the transmission cold (prior to start up) it only took maybe half that. But once I started the car and got the trans up to between 85-120 F then I was able to pump in the rest.

The shifts are so much smoother but now I've developed the downshift "clunk" that is so talked about on this board. The shifts were never crisp enough before IOT notice it. Oh well, such is the perils of fixing one thing and then noticing something else is wrong. From my research it sounds like the software update will solve the clunk.

In an attempt to measure out my old fluid, some did escape a crack in my container. The DIY I refed to sadly didn't make clear the need to measure the old fluid. Some escaped the fill hole when I first opened the trans, and I don't know how I would get anything more in with that bolt out.

@swordsman11868, I had that downshift clunk before, and only when the engine was cold. The new fluid seems to have solved this for me, but we will see how that goes after a bit more time.
