I'm about to change my valve cover gasket. Ive read a few DIYs, but none of them say anything about draining the oil. Based on pictures I've seen I'm assuming that it needs to be drained, but a friend of mine claims that he did his valve cover and didn't need to drain the oil. I was wondering if I have to drain the oil or if I only need to drain around 1 or 2 liters (because I recently changed the oil approximately 900k ago).

If anyone also has any other sugestions about making this DIY a little easier then feel free to post. I'm already going to use high temp sealant for the areas prone to leaking.

You don't need to drain the oil. When the engine is off all the oil drains down the engine into the pan, or most of it. So there is no spillage when you take the valve cover off.

You need to drain the oil...not for the VCG but because 900K even surpases BMWs "lifetime" recommendation :D

That's not so nice, you know. The OP is in Canada, so he probably means kilometers, so only 560K miles! :lmao:

You don't need to change the oil, OP...we're assuming you mean 9,000 kilometers or miles...either way, you don't have to. But, if miles, then pretty soon. No one really knows when here...bmw knows it's around 15K miles, but most here kind of freak about going that long. Me? I'm probably going to do it soon...around 10-12K miles.

GL with vcg...stuff something around engine when you start removing the brittle gasket. Also, I'm sure you know to replace the grommets, and that many here also do Vanos (for that, you do get oil dripping down a bit, so have some covering over the belts if you do that.)

Some good advice that was given to me is run the car for a while before doing the work. By the time ur rdy to remove the valve cover the temp will have dropped enough so it wont burn to the touch. But what this does is help make the vcg easier to remove and less likely to snap if it's turned into plastic.

I mean 900 kilometers ago. Sorry forgot to put in the "m" (900km). Even if I can see the oil in my filler cap I don't need to drain it ?

Unless you've over filled your engine with so much oil that it is flowing out of the oil cap...don't need to drain any oil.

I just did my VCG and there is only a light coating of oil underneath the valve cover.
