Hello,

Sorry this isn't a post about a BMW but I know you guys are the experts. Anyways, my GF's car was broken into and they screwed up the door nicely. Just got it back from the shop today, and noticed the silver wasn't perfectly matched up. The worker said to give the paint some time to cure and it might darken but said to call him back if it still doesn't match. Hopefully the fix will be free of charge.

So the Q is will this darken in time to match or is there no chance?

Doesn't look so good in these shots.

Looks good in this light.

Without a doubt, Silver is the hardest to match perfectly - it can be done though.

I'd say that colour match is off and request the bodyshop to put it right - curing will not change shades - it will only set the paint and clearcoat, so you are ready to wash, wax, polish, whatever.

Some of the pics show a good match. BUt, the others are just off. Ask your GF to take it back and go with her, 'cos some peeps take advantage of girls and fob them off.

Definately a mis-match, Take it back asap !

as already stated-there is NO WAY that your paintwork will age or cure itself to even a satisfactory standard.

i am not an expert on auto refinishing but i am an expert on houseold paints,Curing is another word for drying/going off.

it's very annoying that they have fed you BS on a third rate job.

good luck and please post pic's when sorted

That's what I figured. I'm gonna take it back Monday and have em redo it. Thanks for all the help guys! They better repaint all the light parts instead of trying to blend it in.
I've had my 2000 323i Sedan painted twice by different body shops. The first time the "quality" shop replaced the rear bumper, painted it and the rear quarter panel..matched perfectly! This time the driver's door got scratched and another body shop (overseas) painted it twice with BMW paint and it still is the wrong shade! Now I'm taking it to BMW of Seoul who guaranteed to make it match, but it will cost $350 vs. $200. Bottom line- Your body shop fed you a line of ^$#*! I'm an experienced painter and know the shade doesn't change. The clear coat may not shine as much after it cures. The only way to make it match is to feather/fade the paint with the adjacent door/panels and a "good" body shop will know how to fix it. Good Luck!

Hi all, I spotted this thread in a search and I too have a titanium silver mismatch on a paint respray on my 330Ci.

I had some repair work done on the front left fender which required a respray of paint and new clear coat. The result is a slight mismatch with the left door and the rest of the car. I took it back to the panel shop and he basically said there was nothing they can do about it short of respraying the whole left side of the car but they ain't gonna do that for free. They said they could apply clear coat to the left door but that would risk shifting the mismatch to the rear left 3/4 panel. They said it had something to do with how applying another layer of clear coat can alter the reflectivity of the silver metallic paint IF there had been a previous respray and clear coat applied to that panel (which is the case on mine).

So my question is - am I being taken for a ride? Has the panel shop done a dodgy job to begin with or is what I am being told about respraying over a previously resprayed panel with clear coat going to alter the silver with the next panel the truth? They have offered to go 50/50 for the cost of respraying the whole left side of the car to eliminate any possibility of mismatched panels, but I have already paid good money for the repair job to begin with and I don't want to have to spend any more money. Now I am left with this.

Appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Make sure you engage your insurance company on the issue. On a previous car of mine I was rear ended and the rear bumper had to be replaced. The paint match was awful (white pearl). The shop resprayed it twice after I initially rejected it and it actually got worse. Finally the insurance company handling the claim (State Farm) arranged for the car to be fixed at a BMW dealer and the match was perfect. This is why I am now a State Farm customer!

I've read that silver is a nightmare to get to look even. I remember reading that early in the production of the VW New Beetle the shipment of silver ones was delayed because the silver wouldn't look matched between the plastic body panels and the metal ones. And that was on brand new cars getting painted all at once...

In any case the body shop only did half the job and they need to fix it.

walk across any new car lot and you'll see a variation between plastic bumpers and the steel parts next to them.
