I bought a shark injector software tune from turner motorsport for my 2005 330ci zhp and was a little weary to install it because of two reasons, the first being that I live in california and every 2 years I have to smog my car, and the second being that the instructions are littered with legal jargain explaining if your DME implodes, its not the companys fault and they are not responsible for fixing it. I called turner before installing and asked the guy if it was legal and if the car would still pass smog and he said yes to both, and so I decided to install it regaurdless of the warnings. During the install, as the shark indicated it had moved to stage 2 where it has removed the factory software and is in the process of modifying it, it stopped and flashed the error code 139, or "DME reply unknown" and after removing the shark as it tells you to, the car would not start. It says in the instructions to contact the shark dealer immediately, and I was installing this on a saturday, and turner was therefore closed, so I called them ASAP on monday, and I honestly have no idea why it says to contact them, because the guy literally told me it was broken and that I will need to take the car to the dealer to have them reflash the factory software back on the car. I expected much better customer service from such a well known company honestly. To save a few pennies on a tow, I had the car towed to a closer, independent shop who was unable to flash the DME, and after letting a more qualified independent try his hand at it, the car ended up at the dealer, who quickly called to reassure the car needed a new DME and that the old one was fried. Once the new DME was installed and the tech tried to mate it to the EWS, he claims that there is a BUS in the instrument cluster and that it is ruined on my car, and that it needs to be replaced to make the DME and EWS contact eachother. The car is still at the dealer and they are still waiting on the instrument cluster from germany. Is it possible that the BUS in the instrument cluster could be interrupting the signal to the EWS? The repair bills have far surpassed a comma and I would like to have the car back in working order. Dumbest thing I have done in a long while.

This this would be much more believable if you were a well known poster here on E46Fanatics or if the Shark Injector was known to ever have these issues.

But the truth is you just signed up, and the Shark Injector has an outstanding track record of working properly.

Realistically there was something wrong with your Bimmer to start with, the down load just exposed your preexisting problem.

I get that I am new here, I made the account to try and get advice on the car maybe sombody somewhere has seen something similar happen or knows about DME replacement and can help, so thanks for the warm welcome. I don't see what I could possibly gain by making this up or exaggerating any part of it, what's done is what's done and now all I can do to fix it is move foreward, and it is possible that there may have been a preexisting problem, however the car is immaculate and has only 100k miles and had literally no issues that pointed to electrical or computer problems.

I would love to here Turner Motorsports side of things, they're at least two sides to every story.....

Their side about what? Answering the phone and saying sorry and telling me to take the car to the dealer? The first 2 times I called them they told me the software guy was out so I would have to call later, and they ran my part number to see if I got the right tune for the car, and I did. Once I talked to the software guy they offered me a store credit return or to reprogram the chip for me, and so I told them I wouldn't try that again after I got it working and that I wanted the store credit refund then, so they said they would email me a shipping label and I gave them a full week and a half with no shipping label so I then had to call once again to get them to send it. Must I remind you that the point of this post it not to talk bad about turner or shark, they work out well for 99% of people.

Like I said, they're are at least two sides to every story.

I'd ask you questions like: Did you have a 12v battery charger connected when installing your Shark, because if you didn't, there could be disaster....

But I'm sure you'll say something like: Of course I used a 12v battery charger.

I did in fact use a 12v charger, and actually monitored the voltage during the process, as well as follow the steps completely and thoroughly as the legal jargain had me worried. Also if things like this never happened they wouldn't need that legal jargain anyway. But seriously if you don't have anything better than asking me if I used a charger for the install you are not really helping answer any questions I have and you don't have to reply.

sorry to hear about your problems. i found this pdf instruction file on the shark with a 31 step by step install list. hopefully you followed it perfectly because it shows in 19# that opening the car door while downloading can upset things.

Yeah the instructions are very detailed what you can and cannot do and very clear that severe complications can occur if there is any electrical draw and they tell you to close the door but leave the window down which I did. It is still strange to me that in following the instructions so meticulously it had such a major issue.

Yeah for sure and for that I would think that more people would have complications resulting from attempting install. But I found a forum somewhere of someone who had almost the exact same problem as I did and they had their DME shipped to Jim Conforti and he fixed it for them on his workbench, and when asking turner about that they told me Jim was no longer involved in the software and the only person that could help me is the dealer.

I would have done some research before taking it to the dealer. This likely could have been resolved for a couple hundred dollars.

I did as much as I could before taking it to the dealer I took the car to two seperate independent bmw specialists and they both tried every trick they knew and could not get the DME to respond so they both told me it was a dealer thing so I bit the bullet and took it to the dealer with a tub of vasoline

It was up to $2040 for the DME and the instrument cluster brings it up to $3200 but I made sure the dealer knew I would not pay for the instrument cluster if it did not solve the problem because it still seems unlikely that is the issue to me

I would have loved the shark to work having improved throttle response and removed top speed limiter it would have made the car much more driveable as its the 6MT but it just didnt work out for me I guess

Maybe after all of this down the road I will go for the dinan software as its near the same price range and does similar things and it is actually backed by a warranty and if my DME fries again with that it wont be on my dime

I beleive it was something like $1700 not sure though working off of memory as I do not have the car back or the statement for the repairs
