So I'm taking my car in for an oil change, brake flush, and coolant flush at an independent mechanics shop in Milpitas tomorrow. They specialize in German cars, according to their ads, and they gave an estimate of about $120 for the whole deal. That's a pretty damn good deal, seeing that any dealership would charge up to $80 for each service by itself.

So what's the catch? Is this an really good deal, or am I walking into a bad situation?

And how bad is that I've been conditioned to think that having an expensive car means having over-priced maintenance on it?

That's why you go to independents instead of stealers when the warranty runs out. They don't charge the insane prices dealers do. Think about it, what makes an oil change on your car worth $80-120 (the price depending on the dealer)? The oil itself, at $5 per quart only costs $35. The filter, another $10. Where does the rest come from?

I'm not fan of stealer prices....but if you price out an oil change in comparison to other cars...it's probably about right. Perhaps you just went 10k miles between oil changes. If you go to regular garage for express full service, you end up paying $30. So inorder to span 10k miles, you would have spent $90 already to change every 3k .....oh well

I'm going to this shop called Exclusively German Auto in Milpitas. I've been to German Motor Specialists in Sunnyvale too...they are really good. Nice garage, certified technicians, and really cool ppl. I didn't go to them this time cuz their prices are still a bit high.

Try looking up some other places if you want on siliconvalley.citysearch.com. Good luck!
