Did anyone think of this as yet?

I like the new style selector knobs. I was wondering if anyone is brainstorming a retrofit idea for it. I'm sure it would be either expensive or very darn creative to do.

So I'm about to break this 2009 550i shifter apart and see about fitting it inside my shifter boot. Using the thread on bimmerforums where the DIYer wire the 2008 M6 SMG shifter into their E46 M3s as my guide.

I'm finding it difficult just to seperate the new 550i shifter from the transmission anchor. Also I'm beginning think I should've gotten the other style Sport Shifter where there is a leather boot wrapped around the base. This one seems to be one long continuous device.

and then the DIY should consist of splicing the gear-selection indicator for P R N D +-M/S wiring.

and then fitting it into my car's current steptronic set up so that it will shift and inidacate what gear we are in.

They have a lot of those new type Shifters on eBay for as little as $50 or less. And that usually gets you the entire thing with the transmission gear box attached.

But best advice is for you to try to get the "Sport Package" Steptronic Shifter version from the 2009 5 series that have the leather boot.
Do not get the one that I got that comes off the basic Steptronic package. Those are near impossible to detach from the gear box and after which I won't fit unless you remove and swap out your E46 gear box and then the DIY becomes very advanced.

The DIY should only involve the removal of the shifter knob and insertion of the new knob with leather boots. The wiring for the LED PRND +-M/S indication on the new knob should easily splice with the the old wiring for the PRND +-M/S indication on the E46 console platform (do a search for the M6 SMG Shifter transplant onto an E46 M3 DIY at the M3 Forums for more info on the wire splicing). After this youshould only have trouble fitting the old E46 leather boot onto the new shifter and getting the shifter stalk transplanted onto the E46 gear box. Which should be easy...or hard but not inmpossible.

I'm currently waiting to find the correct Sport Package 2009 5 Series shifter on eBay. The just have a bunch of the regular 2009 5 and X5 Shifters on there.

Forget using your stock boot and indication plate - just do the conversion to a manual boot (you can get a custom one if you want). This would be sweet if someone pulled this off! In for more updates :)

Looks like a waste of money to me. Just my 2 cents...too much to spend for no gain. I like my CF shift knob, never liked the new style ones. Trust me, to get my paddle shifters to work and splice in to wires......that is tough to splice things like that as far as gut feeling if something that goes wrong. There was a gain, paddle shifters though. Now for just a shift knob, and the price of the retrofit, if you can get it to work......you be the judge. Just my 2 cents. I do give you props for doing something different. I just see no gain from this and the high dollar of it just for a shift knob. But support you if you have the time and money, anything can be done if you can fabricate it.

I don't think a fully functional SMG knob has ever been done on the e46. Alot of people have put them on, but then lost many functions. Some people cant shift up and down anymore, and some people cant go into park. Ive PMed people on this site who did the SMG dome retrofit and asked questions about the functionality but nobody has replied. If anyone has a DIY on this Id be happy to see it.
