Replace the fuel pump or the filter or both ?

Hey gang , So finally got ahold of a fuel pressure gauge and hooked her up to see where my lack of fuel at fuel throttle and hard to start issues stem from . this is the result , With the key on and fuel pump primed but not started it only get to about 18 to 20 psi , Well short of the 50 it should do . when you start the motor and it it idle the fp jump to between 45 to 48 . rev to 3k rpm and it gets close to 50 . turn it off and the fuel pressure only drops about 5 to 8 psi for at least 3 to 4 mins anyway . These results have me stumped ? I cant really afford to do both the fuel pump and the filter at the same time which is honestly what i need to do . So my question is, Anyway to fine tune test to see which one it is or if its another problem all together? For reference, The guy i got the car from said he replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter both about 6 to 8 months before he parked it and let it sit for almost 2 years . Thanks in advance guys

Replaced that today with no change . What has me stumped is there is plenty of pressure at the fuel rail after running the car and turning it off . Even 15 mins later . With the gauge showing 45 psi after 15 minutes it’s still takes a lot of cranks to start ? What else could cause this ? Read somewhere the ICV could be the culprit? The car runs and drives very smooth with no lag or sputtering . The problem seems to be intermittent with the hard to start issue .

You need a new fuel pump. Don't buy aftermarket - VDO only. Get the filter later.
18 to 20 is a failed pump, nothing to do with the filter.

The pump is not driven by the engine. It is supposed to provide constant 50psi at all speeds, including primed with the engine off, and has no variable output. So if it is not providing it when priming it, it is not working.

It's possible the fuel check valve is bad. Search for that on here. Is fuel two years old?

You replaced the entire fuel pump?

So no more running issues (lack of fuel at full throttle mentioned in post 1), just occasional hard starts?
