Whats the official recommendation for oil for our 3 series. I read in a past post that its changed to from 5w-30 to 10w-40. :dunno:

Is that true?

Not true.

Use Amsoil IMO. I got it last time, and the car runs extremly better.

Search the old threads, your basic choices are:

BMW recommended Castrol 5W-30 synthetic

Mobil1 synthetic (my choice), same weight

AMSOil synthetic, various weights -- issue here is that AMSOil is VERY expensive vs. the above two.

If you track/plan to track your car, some people prefer Redline, but that's also expensive and I'm not sure about it's suitability for daily use.

Whatever you choose, stick with it, don't switch between multiple oils...

They did switch to syn 5w-40. I even asked the dealer about it.

Does this apply for new 3 series or all e46's? Currently I'm running 0w-30 amsoil oil and that seems to work well for me, I was just wonderin if there was a reason for this change to 5w-40.

Thanks

I was told by a parts manager at BMW to run with semi-synthetic:dunno:
His reasoning was that if you ever needed to add oil, you could add regular oil to semi-synthetic but not to full synthetic:dunno: :dunno:

Should I take his advice or stay with full synthetic?
