2000 323ci 133k miles with a grinding/whump noise from the rear, seems to be on the driver's side, resembling a failed wheel bearing.

Just replaced all 4 wheel bearings, brand new F.A.G parts, and the persisting noise is similar to the failing rear wheel bearing that prompted the replacement.

Noise is consistent with wheel speed not drive line speed, doesn't change with load from the engine, suspension load, or turning.

CV joints seemed fine when they were out during bearing replacement. Boots are in tact, joints seemed solid.

There is no clunking or typical CV joint clicking.

Has anyone experienced a CV joint noise or failure without the tell-tale click?

Do diff output shaft bearing failures exhibit these symptoms?

Drive line is tied to wheel speed. If you've got grinding after new bearings, I'd suspect a differential bearing.

Did the noise that prompted the original wheel bearing replacement go away once the bearings were replaced? If so for how long?

The new noise--is it the same as the old noise?
