I've seen a few pics here and there online, but any good build threads for putting some decent sub in the rear deck? Here are the random pics I found using a google search.

Freeair style subs in the back deck sound like crap..you'll be alot better of with one in a bix in the trunk faced to the taillights. If you're worried about space one quality 8 would sound alot better than 2 in the deck. Matter of an amplified bazooka 8 would do very well. I have 2 10" kicker L7 subs in the truck and sound amazing

Well, I've got a pretty crazy idea in the process. So perhaps I'll do my own writeup. I need my complete trunk space for tools for daily work. But there's a LOT of waisted space in the stupid rear deck area. A good 4 or even 6 inches under that felt.

I installed 6.5” woofers in the package shelf of my old 330Ci. I first punched out the metal that would have been used for the HK woofers. I did some grinding to shape the holes. I use MDF to hold the speakers and sealed the gaps with non-expanding spray foam. I then blocked off the existing holes for the factory woofers in the package shelf. I mounted a 200w Alpine sub amp on a piece of MDF under the package shelf. The design of the system is infinite baffle. Sounded great.

I'm working on a MDF shelf with a sub box held up under the OEM deck. The box will hang in to the trunk area but not that much. Perhaps 4 inches.

I used/mod’d the HK sub holes in the package shelf. Then used medium density fiberboard (MDF) to mount the 6.5” subs. Sealed the gaps between the MDF and the metal shelf with non-expanding foam and cheap sound deadening sheets. Blocked the holes where the no-HK factory woofers sat with some plastic sheets and the foam in a can.

Yea what I'm doin is a crazy big project, but in the end for me it will be worth it. Today I'm going to work on pushing up the box further in to the deck to clear as much room in the truck as possible. I built the box exact specs for the subs, and I'm willing to lose rear window space. But trunk space for me is a necessity for daily work.

I made a templet of the MDF deck so I can reproduce. And I'm considering possibly offering installs to local Las Vegas e46 owners. But not sure yet. It's a LOT of work.

I plan to do a detailed full write up once I'm finished and have the time. I've made mistakes along the way, so I want to make sure to document that as well. Also i need to learn how to use this editing software for the forum. lol.

Decided to raise the box higher up in to the deck to make for more trunk room. Really happy with the results. Drove around tonight and didn't notice hardly any visibility loss in the rear window. Even though I have a big ass speaker box sticking out in the rear deck. lol.
