okay, i have been debating if i should get a radar laser detector.

from what i understand the valentine is the best out there but 400 is little pricy for me right now.

is there any other ones out there that are just as good but maybe more affordable. i hear lots about the escort ?????

i am interested to hear your guys reactions to diffrent kind of detectors, are they accurate, any false alarms?

i am not outrulign the valentine completely but if there is something just as good out there for less i wanna know.

thanks guys.

i wouldnt do the S2, cordless are known to be less effective than hardwired.

get the Passport 8500, its better than the V1 anyway, and $100 less at $300 :D (flame suit on)

this is a battle that has been fought and won many times on this board...

search...you will find great info on radar detectors as well as many opinions...

v1 is by far the best detector, and worth every penny.

V1 is king no doubt, second place would go to the Escort 8500.
Sigity is right do a search and you will find the V1 is top dog, I know $400 dollars is alot but trust me when you see it in action you will wonder why didnt I buy this sooner!

honestly.. just save up until you can afford the v1. v1 has almost no depreciation, its by far the best performer, and youll never regret buying it.. just dont speed until you have enough for the v1. dont buy anything cordless, they dont work because batterys cant power a radar-detector, its almost always on power-save mode, and if you get instant-on'd youll be paying 400 to the POLICE

Call Valentine and order a open box/return unit. People return them after the 30 day period. I got mine and the remote display unit for less than $400. Sometimes the discounts are more after Christmas (from what I have read) as they get a flood of units returned. You can only get this by calling them. You cannot tell the open box vs the new.

from what i understand the v1 has diffrent software on it and if lets ay i buy it know in few months they might have anew version out so i hae to send my for an upgrade for like 200 more, is this true??

would you get a v1 from ebay??

how much would installation be on the v1, i dont wanna see any wires and prefer the unit isnt by the windshield where it is easily spotted

first of all, radartest.com is complete garabage and is biassed towards passport. ANY other review says v1 owns, and ask anyone on this forum. Second, the V1 is a very easy DIY. The new 1.8 software on the V1 just recently came out, i doubt there will be any new upgrade soon, and yes the upgrade to the new version is 200 if you have the older one, but the old ones sell for 325 on ebay, making the upgrade really only 75. plus if you get an open box unit from V1 it will most likely come with the 1.8, just ask them first.

passport srx is almost as garbagy as k40

your best bet for mosly unbiased opinions is from speedzones.com, a website nobody knows about

basically time and time again the V1 and 8500, the only two options worth considering, fare equally well with V1 having some leg-ups in KA and dominating in rear reception (2 antennas)

real benefit of V1 over 8500 is the inclusion of the directional arrows, presence of 2 antennas, and - in my opinion - easier to use threat tracking system

I have a Bel 980. Works great. Never failed once (no tix), very few false alarms, and the ability to turn off K or X band if you choose. I live in South Florida and I think only Ka band is used down here. Laser also works real well. I believe the 985 is out now, which should only be an improvement.

first off, the valentine radar detector is not the best radar detector...its the more prefered one because it tells u the direction from where the cop is comming from...but it is not the best...if u look at motor trend, there is an ad that says V1 is the MOST PREFFERED detector. If you look at another ad on motor trend, it will say " Passport 8500 rates a 98 with Bel 985 following at 95 and V1 at 93. And is you look at another ad in the same damn magazine, you'll see a Bel ad that says Bel 985 at 97 points, passport at 95 points, and V1 and 91 points.
I have a Bel985, i like it alot, works great. In my opinion i would go with a Bel cause ive had one for almost 3 years and it hasnt failed me yet. But a lot of people chose passport which i believe is just as good and may even be better. But as for the V1, not worth it if you ask me, yea it looks cool, but if you are going for looks just buy the rear view mirror with the V1 built into it from uminitza! but if u wanna be cheap but good id go with Bel or Passport

i actualyl disagree. I happen to think the V1 is ugly, and an eyesore. Especially the older model, but I am currently on my 3rd v1 not for its looks, but its performance. In my 5 years of driving i have not gotten a single speeding ticket, i havent even been pulled over for speeding. I have consistently tested my v1 against friends bels, ecorts, and passports and found the v1 to give warning a lot quicker allowing for us to slam on the break a lot faster. I personally dont go by ratings in car magazines, theres almost always a biased opinion towards one company or another. Seeing as how Valentine only makes a single unit gives me a lot of faith in them. Instead of having crappy models which are more affordable, they concentrate all their research and development into a single unit. while yes 400 is a lot to pay, it will pay for itself time and time again.
