ssabripo- are u talking about retaining the smart cord in your installation? or is it a simple hardwire to the headliner area that u are speaking of?

the Direct Wire kit comes with another Smart Cord, correct?

how much did u pay from Escort

No, the Direct wire Kit does NOT come with the smart cord...that is a separate kit costing $30. The simple wire costs $10. As for my RD, I gotta it thru a hookup....same price as the people who bought those 10 from that dude.

Anyone know if you can use a plain phone cord to extend the length of the power cord on the Passport 8500? The adapter looks the same (RJ11) and as long as the connector is wired straight thru (phone extension), it should work? I dunno why Escort didn't give us the direct-wire cord in the first place.. :banghead:

bringing this thread back, did anyone figure out if a telephone wire is enough to do this hardwire??

there are 3 cords in the 8500 cord, 2 are for 12V power, one for something else....

any info is apreciated.

How are you planning on hardwiring it? I eventually just bought a 10ft black phone cord, RJ11 coupler, and connected it and stuck the wire down the A-pillar and around the steering column. I'm probably getting the directwire eventually, that is if I don't sell the 8500 and upgrade to a V1. :)

i didnt know if that would work or not. i see the hardwire kit on there for $30, includes the smart cord, but i didnt really want to rip apart my A pillar to run those wires. i am content with wiring it directly to a power supply in the overhead area.

will a phone cord work? what wires need to go where? sorry for the many Q's

thx for the link TQUACH. ordering now, instead of using telephone wire :D

DIY should be simple enough.... 2 years in the waiting too (yea i am lazy)

actually, the only reason i have waited so long, was because i was trying to figure out someway to tap into my steering wheel buttons for the power and mute buttons, but that seems to not be worth the effort.

Yes, a regular old phone wire will work and will handle the voltage no problem. When I have the 8500 I hardwired it with phone cord to save some bucks.

If you have a multimeter, just test continuity with the cigarette adapter to figure out which wires to use for positive and ground. Not difficult if you know your way around wiring.
