2002 M3 vert: The cover on the roll over protection on the rear headrests does not seem to close fully. They were like that when I purchased the car but it does not seem correct. Are there supposed to be some clips that hold the cover closed and then break off if the rollover protection is activated? Also can some please let me know what i need to do to make the photos display with the proper orientation? I have rotating them before uploading but they still come out sideways.

Rear seat headrest Rollover Cover

There are 2 springs (I believe) that hold the flap cover closed. It appears yours are missing based on your photo. I have a 2001 330Ci and mine are present. I checked "RealOEM" (https://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do) to see if I could find a part number for you; it appears that you would have to buy the entire headrest assembly. I also checked a couple online BMW part suppliers and couldn't find a PN for the spring. They are pretty stiff so I don't know if you can source them at a hardware store but perhaps you can find a spring specialist or a BMW junk dealer and get them there.

I just got a new headrest for my 330 which has the same problem. It seems there is a plastic piece that breaks off. I believe what happens is the leather shrinks a little and puts too much tension on the whole assembly. I bought a used headrest off eBay for about 60 bucks. It might be possible to fix the existing one but it seems very fiddley and might not work.

I had a bump up, and my rollover bars deployed. They broke the closing mechanism for each back headrest flap. I temporarily am using a thin, black, elastic cloth cord to keep them closed. Because my headrests are black, they aren’t noticeable, from behind. I just can’t see paying for 2 entire headrest replacements. I’ll create my own mechanism to keep them closed.
