Hello fellow fanatics!

So, I seem to have been losing oil for the past year or so. Every 200 miles I'm having to throw a quart in! There is no dripping on my driveway. Sometimes I can visibly see oil dripping from my oil filter housing. It seems that no matter what I do the o ring comes out of place. Originally thought it was my ccv but I noticed a large amount of oil dripping from the housing and I think that's the problem. I've bought new oil filters several times trying to get the oring to fit snugly, what am I doing wrong here? I don't see excess amounts of oil on the housing itself since I cleaned it off and re-tightened the lid about 50 miles ago but now It looks loose (it's lopsided hanging out). Check out the attached picture and please don't hesitate to tell me what I could be doing wrong!

It's important to lubricate it well with clean motor oil before installation. Make sure the groove is clean where it rests and be careful not to stretch it putting it on. Other than that, I can't imagine what else is causing it to extrude.

Perhaps its' just the photo, but it looks as if there is a crack on the top of the housing neck where the filter cap screws in, exactly where you circled the sealing O-ring... If this is a crack, you'll need a new oil filter housing.

In case there is no crack:

The cap looks like it has taken some beating, possibly from using tools other than a 36-mm socket to remove and install.
Since the cap is cheap, I'd just buy a brand new one from BMW along with all associated O-rings. Use a proper 36-mm socket on the new one. Tighten the cap by hand until it's going in nice and easy, then use a wrench, but don't over torque. The speck is 25 N-m (18 ft-lbs).

Next, a quart every 200 miles is a lot of oil. You may not see drops on your driveway since it will leak only when the engine is running. As soon as you shut it down the oil will settle into the oil pan. But there should be a plenty of engine oil smeared on the driver side of the engine and underside of both engine and transmission. Did you have a chance to inspect these areas?
If you don't have a lot of oil down there, you should consider that the leak is not the only way you are losing oil...

You are putting the o-ring in the wrong place. In the groove not on the shoulder.

Yep...I'm betting that the oring is not seated in the correct groove.

Thanks for the advice!

I will reseat the oring in the proper groove...that's probably it, and get back to you! Will inspect for a crack as well.

Does anyone have the part number for the housing cap handy?

Yeah OP, that o-ring is on the wrong place. Looks pinched between the filter cap and the metal housing. It belongs in the groove as mentioned earlier.

Okay so I lubed up the o ring and put it on the notch as suggested but it still began to flare out (see pic) after I drove it. It's driving me NUTS. I'm about to buy a new housing cover as this seems like the only other option. I just don't get it. Is it too loose or too tight? Before I buy a new part I'll try and torque it to 18ft lbs with a 36mm socket. It seems that when I tighten it it just ignores the notch. Is the O ring visible on y'all's e46 after tightening? If anyone's had a similar problem I'd really appreciate any input. My engine bay is wreaked with oil everywhere from this leak and I even had my alternator go bad from the oil dripping on it so I had to buy a new one. I'm not even driving at this point it's so bad. Please, any other advice would be greatly appreciated and I'll even make a video showing the process I'm using to put it on if necessary.

As suggested in a prior post, there is most likely an old o-ring stuck in the groove and your doubling up on the o-ring forcing it to move and slide when you tighten the cap down. Get in that groove with a pick type tool and see if you can dig out an old 0-ring.

The groove is pretty thick and should be able to seat a new o-ring easily within the oil filter housing. Once you get that cleaned out, just make sure its seating correctly as you're torquing the cap down.

I'm starting to think this is right.

If the o-ring is truly in the groove there is no way it can become extruded as you are seeing. The o-ring slides all the way into the aluminum housing and the shoulder of the cap tightens against the aluminum. No, the o-ring is not visible at all after correct installation.

I checked and didn't see another oring last time I put it together but I'll look closer and see if ones stuck in there and report back. I figured it would be easily visible but will be more thorough this time.

Y'all were right! There was an old ring stuck in there that appeared to be flush with the threads as it's flattened with age. I feel so stupid :facepalm:

Pretty sure I've been changing my oil wrong for the last year. :banghead: Only one way to learn I suppose. I hope if anyone else is having this issue they find this thread.
