Don't accept the dealer putting 5W30 in your car. BMW has phased this oil out and there probably is a good reason for it. For one 5W40 protects your engine better as it has a better wear rating and includes better binding agents than 5W30 and provides better cold-start protection. Attached is a zip file with a PDF export from the BMW TIS.

Here is a excerpt from the attachment so you can tell the dealer for once they voided your engine warranty by putting the wrong oil in.

"It is of utmost importance that as part of any oil service only this premium oil formulation used. To assure customer awareness concerning this matter a label has been developed which is placed on the manifold cover and therefore immediately visible when lifting the hood."

Kevin, thanx for sharing  but I thought you'd like to know that your info from the BMW TIS is outdated. I have a copy of the November 99 notice which supercedes the one you sent. It states that as a result of their global alliance with Castrol, the new weight for BMW Longlife Motor Oil's will now be 5w30 which provides the equivalent protection as the original 5w-40.

Post the TIS info then?

I thought the same info on 5W40 was posted on BMWUSA.com a couple of months ago?
