Noob Question: Stagering Tires?

OK.. I'm a noob... What does stagering tires do or not do for performance? I've been thinking of buy 18" #71 style rims for my "new" 2001 325i... Some comapny offer stagering the tires, some don't. It also seems a tad more expensive....

Wider tire = more grip on the road. Looks better as well.

Upside: Slight increase in grip for forward movement, better cosmetic appearance.

Downside : more understeer handling bias, cannot rotate tires, may limit tire choices (ie, the tire you want will have to come in both sizes), may need to roll rear fenders depending on fitment.

Thanks for the explanation! I think I'm going to go with all 8" wide.
