After a short distance driving i parked the car and shutoff the engine and went inside the store. Got out and jumped in the car. When i turn the key car would not start. No crank. It's like turning the key in the air. (no the ignition switch assembly is not broken ie the key springs back when i release my grip).

Dash lights up and horn is strong. Cant check for cel as i cant start the car. I t's not likely a bad batt but i tried jump starting anyway. No crank. I can hear the fuel pump priming and i dont think it's fuel related but i tried to listen to it anyway.
I tried nudging the shifter, and also put it in neutral. Still no crank. I tried my spare key, no luck. Need guide on how to troubleshoot. Sounds like elec issue and that the starter is not getting any elec juice.

Do you have any modifications? Check the ground wire on the engine block on the exhaust side.

Another suggestion is to get into the OBC and view option 9 (voltage) and see how much the voltage drops when you turn the key to attempt to start the car. If the voltage drops but the starter doesnt engage, its most likely the starter.

I had a similar issue on my 325i and just held the key in the start position for about 30 seconds and it finally engaged. I purchased a new starter, but it has been working fine since and I havent installed it yet.

We did the battery connections already, right? Multimeter/cluster test

I never people when they say the battery is fine. Hooked up for 5 mins. on a real sick battery might not be enough. Check date stamp beneath the bracket...and remember cca as they need to know that if load testing with a real machine...not tiny toy battery 'tester.'

Careful about straying too far from the basics first, OP. That you have lights, horn...doesn't mean battery is good.

Too bad you can't kick start it...love that feature!

Try jumping for 10 mins with donor car revving...and hook up to battery in trunk directly.

Just saying!

My car actually exhibited similar behavior recently and by that I mean my car not having any problems starting and then one day, bam, no start. After trying to diagnose for two days and not figuring it out, I took it to my local indy. After 15 hours, he finally found the problem. The battery line to the starter motor is connected by some type of plate which was corroded, not allowing power to get to the starter motor. He said I should've had some instances where I go to turn the key and it didn't start and then I try again immediately and it starts. Might be a long shot but check that out.

I know the starter is located in an inconvenient spot. But, the best way to see if it is the starter, is to check your signal at the starter. When you turn the key to the "crank," position, you should have battery voltage, and ground, at the starter. If you've got juice and it doesn't crank, you need a starter.

We'll see, I guess. What makes you think starter? I picked battery because of his opening line...after a short drive.

I know starters just fail, but it seems like often they'll give you a freebie or two. I know a low battery like the one I had a couple of weeks ago would cause a repeated clicking, but it could be so low it wouldn't even do that, I suppose.

Wiggle those connections, OP...title search 'ground locations' and check the major ones.

no crank, no click, no start

Hi everyone

I have got my bmw into a very serious crash that most of the parts in front was broken and damaged, the driver sides airbag bag was deployed and the car was turned off after the crash but there was no damage to the engine and computers like DME etc from the outlook . And I took it to local bimmer service and they have changed and fixed all the damaged parts in my car that were broken and they replaced all the parts and now cant start the car. They cant get a connection with my car through their software and wasn't able to find the problem and they are saying that i should buy a new dme and try. But I think that the problem is not in the dme because it looks fine not even a scratch on it. I will list the weird signs that are showing on the dashboard:
-There is no crank
-No check engine sign is showing when the key is on
-Instead of "P" parking sign there is a weird circular sign, even when I shift the gear it doesnt change
-EML sign
-Brake sign
-ABS sign
-The temprature gauge goes to its maximum when the key is turned and even when I disconnect the DME and Transmission control.

I will be very thankful for your advice!

There is a battery safety terminal at the battery, that cuts off power for safety reason in case of an accident.
Check that, if that's not the problem, read the No start link in my signature.
