I own a 2004 bmw 325i automatic 4 door sedan. I bought the vehicle last year and I have done many repairs. Mainly all new cooling system, suspension, all new seals for oil pan, vanos seals, oil reservoir manifold, head cover gasket and new head cover. It was driving fine until last week Tuesday. It was a cold morning -25 degrees, it always start right up at the first time, but that particular morning I had to started twice. I drove to work just fine and when it was time to go home I had nothing, no sound, no click click, no crank and no start, just lights came on the dashboard. The car came with a battery for Walmart Everlast with only 650CCA. I checked the voltages and it read 12.9 volts. I bought a bigger battery any ways from Auto Zone H8-AMG thinking that would resolve the issue but it wasn't the case.

I can unlock and lock the doors, open the trunk and roll up and down the windows along with sunroof pressing the buttons on my keyless entre, but it just won't do anything. I don't if my key fob lost connection with the EWS or if my Starter when bad, any input or advise will greatly appreciated. Thank you

is your car a manual? If so can you bump start it? If it's automatic, can you try using another vehicle to jump it, while checking voltage at the jumper terminals in the engine bay?

the50skid has a great video about no crank no start causes.

I followed this guide to learn that my starter was the cause of my no crank no start issue.

WAIT!

You are describing the anti-theft system getting in the way. Your key has an RFID chip in it, and there's an antenna ring around the ignition lock. The key and the antenna talk to each other to confirm that the key actually belongs to the car, if the conversation does not go well, the car will behave as if the gear selector is off of P or N, the dash lights will come on, but the car will not start. No click, no nothing. My kid's car did this, she could unlock the doors and do everything, but the car would not start. She had another key that worked fine, except it didn't have the remote buttons for the doors and trunk, so she carried the key with the buttons so she could work the locks, and another key so the car would start. She had to buy another key and get it coded to the car. If you have another key, see if it starts the car. The key is a point of fail, and the antenna is also a point of fail. I don't remember how to isolate the key or the antenna is you only have one key. If you have two keys, and one of them starts the car, then the antenna is okay. If neither of them start the car, then this makes the antenna look bad.

I do not have another key, but I watched a video where the car had the same symptoms and the guy was able to start it with the valet key. After that he was able to start the car with the original key. I was almost certain that my key lost communication. I will have to get a valet key from the dealer.

Try this test of the EWS in the key if you can’t test the system with another key.

Get in the car, close the doors, insert the key into the ignition, try and start, turn back to OFF, but don’t remove the key. Now open the door. Does the car beep at you for leaving the key in the ignition? If it doesn’t, then you probably have a bad EWS in the key. If it does, then likely a bad starter, ignition switch, clutch switch (if manual trans), gear selector switch (if auto trans), or a host of other things. But, at least you can rule out the EWS in the key and the RWS ring antenna.

The car does beep once I open the door.
I also noticed that my stereo does not work, it's stuck on AM band, once I insert the key in the ignition and turn the key to the first position the display in it looks like this and it won't let me make any changes?

Could be alternator, when was the last time you did the belts, alternator, battery, wp and tensioners? Fuses like ignition and fuel could be blown. Only way to know what is causing your crank no start is a scan in the obd port on the top of the engine release. Get it scanned yourself with a schwab scanner or by a rep. independent bmw specialist. Hope this helps you. -Jordan

Battery is only 2 weeks old and holding 12.9 volts, did the belts in May, I checked fuses in the engine. Also the once behind the glove compartment box (100 & 50 AMP). All the fuses that I have check for are ok.

My next steps will be to replace the ignition switch first then starter.

Hmmm? When electronic issues combine starting and something like the radio, it seems to always be the ignition switch.

I've been here a while, OP...I know I've read this more than once here over my years--but I'm old and probably not thinking clearly. :)
