After being inspired by liherc's amazing night shots I decided to go down the block and test out my S230. The results? CRAP IMO... this camera is way noisey and just can't handle low light situations well at all. These shots were taken at ISO 50 with a 4" shutter on some and 2" on others... not horrible, but not as good as I'm looking for... might have to trade up to a better/different model.

Couple tips.(keep in mind im just an amature my self as well.)
1)USE a tripod. when u use a shutter speed longer than 1/15th always use a tripod, although that number is diff for everynoe)
2)The graininess comes from the ISO speeds. although 100 is the best IMO, no matter what light conditions, all my pix were taken with 100ISO. but there is more artistry and masterful photography from higher film speeds, i've yet to achieve that part.
3)Check ur Focus modes. as diff modes can give diff effects.
4)Lenses. if ur cam accepts the wideangle, or telephoto. both yields very different effects. some are very rewarding!
Of course, the physical limits of the cam it self is extremely limiting, there is no way around that.

Don't go gettin' mushy on me or anything... just giving you props. 
But thanks for the tips man... my camera doesn't give me too much to work with... no lense attachments at all. I definitely need a Tripod but with that I might have to upgrade the camera as well. Canon just came out with a 4MP compact with 3x zoom, which figures, a month after buying my 3.2MP with only 2x zoom.
I always thought the higher the ISO the noisier the image... that's why I had it set at 50. The problem is, with this camera anyway.. decreasing the shutter speed is just like raising the ISO. I don't think this Canon has the built in Noise filtering that most digicams have. Anyways.. I'll keep working at it, Thanks!

Do u have the S20 or S30 ?? S30 is awesome and takes great night shots, i would recheck ure setting and aperatures especially
i got tons of great grainless photos out of it...
ive recently upgraded from the s30 to s40 and its even better, but i still loved that s30, and dont discount it so soon.
btw, get ureself a tripod asap

i would say to continue shooting with the camera and play with the settings till u get what u want.. btw shoot in RAW mode, thats a must!. and if i misread ure post and u have the S20, then upgrade to an S30 atleast, or an S45

addendum, ok i just loaded up canons webpage and i see the S230 is just a 3 megapixel ELPH.
yea ELPH is basicly for show man, its a decent camera, but its just small more geared towards point and shoot.
id recommend u get the S30 which is a little bigger and heavier but a great camera, or even the S45 if ure spending money.. or even G2 hehe

coooL i didn't know you could set arpeture and shutter speed settings on the S230. I have this camera and although the quality isn't the greatest, the thing is sooOO tiny and is meant for point & shoot use. I recently purchased a PowerShot G3 4.0mp. This cam has so many features and the quality is just amazing. I highly recommend it :thumbup:
Yeah I just have the tiny Elph which is good for what it's for I guess, carrying around in your pocket, point and shoot. I wanted a compact cam for those reasons but I didn't expect it to be so sensitive to low light situations. I figured at 3.2MP it'd more than powerful enough to do what I want. I'll probably trade up to the S400 when it comes out and make a big purchase of either a G3 or 5700. Oh and you have mad camera skills, you probably could make my Elph look good.
