BMW is at it yet again. This time the ubiquitous blue coolant is to be phased out and a changeover to green has already begun.
The new formulation is of HT-12 composition, whereas the old familiar blue coolant was G48.
According to BMW the green (not Prestone or new Zerex fluorescent green BTW) is compatible with the old faithful blue:

  • Genuine:

  • SKU:83-19-2-468-442
  • Description:
HT-12 Antifreeze Coolant, Green - 1 Gallon. BMW HT-12 can be used in any vehicle that currently contains G48 coolant (blue), but G48 should not continue to be used in vehicles that were originally filled with HT-12. (see compatibility image) This HT-12 Antifreeze/Coolant is exclusively formulated and produced for BMW to protect your engine year-round when used as directed. It fulfills the very high standards and requirements set by BMW to help protect the engine against freezing, boil over, corrosion, and excessive silicate gel precipitation. This ethylene glycol-based antifreeze contains no nitrites or phosphate, greatly reducing the possibility of harmful deposit formation. BMW antifreeze provides protection for metals such as cast iron, steel and aluminum.

...and the 4 liters of fluids I need in my f30 cost $450. Two diffs, trans, and transfer case...and some sort of fluid transfer pump! There's no drain in the transfer case, so another 'lifetime' fluid--bmw really doesn't want its cars going as long as they can. Exploring alternative non-OE fluids, but probably will stay OE.

I find good deals on unopened BMW blue coolant concentrate for $15-$20 per gallon jug on facebook, craigslist, etc..usually from fellow DIY'ers. I probably have 4-5 jugs now, maybe I'll load up some more.

poor E46 getting older and older by these changes.
so the green is compatible with the blue, but not all greens. HT-12 works with G48. geez going to have to make up rhymes to remember this crap.
