Grabbed some pics of the bushing press kit I have. Again, well worth picking one up if you plan on doing rear suspension work. Ball bearing thrust washers and centering on all the cups makes for smooth operation.

Where did you pick this up? There is a kit in my future, but not quite yet. Trying to find the best one to get.

I just don't want to buy 6 different tools to do all my bushings. The one you posted looks like it got everything to do a refresh. I would too go with an urethane bushings on the diff with all the stress it goes through

The sub-frame is the one place I'd definitely retain rubber bushings unless the car is a race car or truly dedicated track car. The reason is, rubber will absorb movement of the sub-frame, reducing the levering of the mounting studs. Urethane will immediately transfer any movement at all of the sub-frame into stress on the mounting studs.

Oh man. I feel your pain. My wife's Subaru Tribeca finally bit the dust Friday night, or at least I'm pretty sure. We've been battling an overheating issue for a year and kind of kept it under control. I finally had to get this gasket stuff you put in the water to seal up gasket leaks. Seemed to work for a few months. Then Friday the temp spiked and it stopped. I rescued her and we went to dinner. The car was low on gas, so I picked up a new gas can and put some gas in the tank. Seemed like that took care of it. Got about 2/3 of the way home and it did the same thing. Now when I try to start it, it sounds like there is NO compression.

We've been trying to nurse it until we get her old house sold and buy a new car. Looks like we are reversing the order. Gotta get a loan with no early payoff penalty. Poop.

The Tribeca has a host of issues that when I go to their forum, it turns out people have tried bunches of things. The factory is aware of the problems with NO set protocol for fixing them.

Good luck with the VW. It's a pain, but at least you know you'll have it solved.

On the touring front, I'm going through ridiculous amounts of oil and starting to worry it's internal as I'm not seeing crazy amounts of oil on the outside of the engine like I would expect. I've been planning on getting a B30 to swap in next year. I'm hoping the current engine holds out.

Oh ouch! Sorry dude.

My old Honduh CRX (OMG about 30 years ago) had something similar. I had some overheating one time pulling my kart trailer across Ontario Canada (from Leamington, near Detroit, to Rochester, NY). Never was the same after that. One day the damned thing stopped. Opened the hood to find the cam seized and snapped in two at the timing gear!

At least you found it.

Yep. Great little cars. When they first came out I had a student show up with a SC model at Texas World Speedway. I got to drive it a bit. Just a great car. Reasonably quick. Very reasonable handling. No real vices I could find in the time I was in the driver's seat.

Woot for slightly damaged return parts! This came back to the parts department and it was going to get tossed, but instead it's coming home with me! I should have no issue repairing the damaged tab. Interesting thing is as they come they apparently don't go straight in and come with 2 different templates for trimming the rear edge depending on model. Very interesting. Now I'm going need to replace the res of the bits, though, as they will all look shabby in comparison!

If you reference my headliner thread, I used a plastic thin screen mesh as back-up to my tab repair. Stronger than the original plastic. I recommend it.

What is the trimming for? I'll be following this. I've had a new center console (and cup holder) in the garage for some time now waiting for my reupholstery to get done.

Thanks and congrats on the DIY service! My dad got some 2x4s the other day and they were almost $7/ea!

OMG, I'm wanting to put up a shed and an outbuilding. Looks like the outbuilding can wait.

Ordered what I think is the last round of parts, less fluids, for the swap today.

Also did this:

You're 91k behind me. ;) Just turned 268k yesterday. Before the end of the year, I'll have put more than half the miles on this car (bought it with 137k or so miles).

When they make it on the car, there will be pics. I didn't want to dig into the suspension until I had these ready to go on. Now I'm ready, and it shouldn't take too long to swap out the springs/shocks/struts. This coming weekend is pretty busy, so I may not get it done until the following weekend. I'd like to try to get my daughter involved, if she's interested.

Inner tire edge wear is rarely due to camber. Usually it’s due to toe, although yours doesn’t look bad. My first E46 had inside tire edge wear on one side the whole time I owned it. Never did get that sorted out.

Since doing my RTABs I've been seeing much improved inner tire wear.
Yeah, my next suggestion was going to be suspension bushings. Something that allows good alignment while static, yet allows too many degrees of freedom while moving.
