Well, the inevitable has finally happened. the dreaded no reverse has shown up on my bmw 323i with 176k miles  . Given the age of my car and the mileage, I'm not looking to drop major coin on the car. Anybody know of a Minneapolis based transmission shop able to do a transmission rebuild at a fair(er) price. I've spoken to a few indie shops and they all say it'll cost 3k + because of ATF and solenoid valves. Anyone in the Twin Cities had their tranny rebuilt, where and what did it cost you?

I have always heard it was more of a GM issue more so then on the ZF units?
GM's have issues in the valve body. The ZF's crack the reverse drum inside the trans

OP here, Sadly, it's a zf. Local tranny specialist is quoting me scary numbers. While he says the fix is simple, the tranny fluid and parts prices are scary. Anyone out there willing to entertain using some alternative sources for parts and fluids (e.g. http://www.autotransparts.com/ and buying ATF by the quart instead of gallon) for less than 2500?

Manual swap. Don't you dare put a steptronic back in that thing.

FWIW I know one person who's run into this problem. His trans went out about 2 years ago. He got a remanned trans for about 900 bucks and got it installed. This year that transmission crapped out on him. So finally he's wising up and doing a manual swap.

Learn from his mistake!!!!
