I recently purchased a 2000 328Ci with 44,xxx miles. It makes a mild "clunk" sound from the rear end when I lift off the throttle or when I initiate pressure on the throttle. Happens when moving forward or backward. Anyone have had this problem or can at least offer some good speculation and can enlighten me?

Noise from the rear end or around middle of the car? If it's from around the middle of the car, I would check the center support bearing (CSB). If yours is original, it's probably disintegrated by now.

Check the 3 diff mounts. Check how much free play in the diffs gears. If everything seems fine there then next is the centre support bearing but that's more work to check so is more of a replace and hope it fixes the issue.
