You need to look and see as I don't believe there was a clean cutoff when the factory started installing them, plus a prior owner could have installed the hydraulic tensioner. In all cases the a/c tensioner is mechanical.

If this helps determine approximate cutoff - my 10/02 production 2003 330i had the mechanical one and it was upgraded to hydraulic when I had a new thermostat and belts put in.

Old thread, I know. So the A/C is ALWAYS mechanical, and can use the (delete"DELCO") Dayco that E46Mango recommends??? The main drive belt is probably hydraulic on a 2005 (09/2004 build date) 330XI? Just replace both pulley's and the idler pulley - which is always mechanical too?

Delco? Maybe you mean Dayco? The Dayco 89133 is the mechanical pulley replacement. There's only one idle pulley so no mechanical/hydraulic choice there.
