This thought had been in the back of mind for quite sometime now, and I was wondering, what has been the maximum displacement that anyone has achieved on a m54 engine? I imagine it can’t be much greater than 3.0L, but how much has someone been able to achieve?

Since the M54 has sprayed on CI liners you can't really increase the bore. You can however stroke it to 3.2L which is the biggest I've seen.
Hmm, from the blocks I've seen, I thought it was a cast- in iron liner form.

But either way, there's not enough meat there to bore it beyond what's
needed to seal.

Most any M54 engine in reality has 1 overbore piston, unlike the iron blocks having 3.
Any overbore on such a small displacement motor increases displacement by an insignificant amount. We're not talking about a Chevy 454 with 8 pistons and a .60 overbore.

PTG had an interesting solution years ago for the S54 race engine. Clem & crew chose to use a S52 crankshaft and offset hone the crankshaft journals (the S52 were some 3-5MM larger) and net-net ended up with a .2L increase in displacement. Going from 3.2L to 3.4L

I think the largest I recall was 3.4L that AutoTalent sold some time ago. it was very Very expensive.

as mentioned in reality you’re not going to be able to do this yourself. you’re better off doing a 3.0L with FI or an S54 swap.
