Obviously one should not bolt up the tranny with a hole on the block like this, and how many times he removed the tranny to check the oil seal leaking?. There are no ant-holes on a metal engine.
You are correct, but I’ll bet this isn’t the first time it’s happened. That and many other things that can go wrong building an engine. Obviously experience and attention to detail goes along way.

Just a note on rear seal installation. I did this on my 740i. To slip seal over flange, I cut down the height of a round butter/margarine tub (Land'oLakes for quality compatibility) so the tub ID at the cut edge matched the OD of the flange. A little oil on the tub and the flange, and the seal slipped on very easily. No seal leak worry.

Well done!
I didn't watch it all.
Just to add: If the threads of the block are wet with oil, the thread sealant is NOT likely to work well.

Anytime we use sealant to close up an open (not blind) hole. The threads must be clean & dry.

We usually use brakleen and a little compressed air.
Be CAREFUL, some types of solvent can damage the rear main seal. One should spray the hole and avoid ALL spray onto the seal itself!

Doing my victory dance from Post #18. Glad you caught it. I would consider a good thread locker, which you can take out later in the unlikely event you need to - using a torch.

Last fall I struggled to find a product like that as I reinstalled the plugs in a Supra I restored. I was worried using a plumbing oriented product wouldn't hold up to the heat of a block and the creep of hot oil. If you have a specific product in mind, I'd love to know of it as I seem to run into this about every 4 years. Thanks.
