Masking tape does not stick to leather door panels in E46 M3

386 Views 17 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Chawewan
Hi All,

After finishing off the console area ( stripping the rubber crap off ) i thought it would be a good idea to
get the rubber crap off around the speakers as well ( woops - mistake )...
It appears that the plastic around the speakers is different than the console and whilst the rubber came
off so did the black paint under it....
So i thought no big deal i will spray them however here is my problem - NO BLDY tape will stick to the
leather to allow me to mask the area off....
I washed the door panels using warm soapy water ( dish wash liquid / water ) so that i wouldn't damage
the nappa leather and i tried - Painters tape ( Blue ), Industrial black tape and 3M general purpose tape
and all three do not stick at all....
Anybody else hit this problem and can assist....

Cheers

I would just take off the door card and remove the speaker grill to paint away from the car.

Wipe with alcohol
Thx for replying Paraklas,

Will the rubbing alcohol damage the leather insert or discolour ?? being that it's soft nappa leather

I have removed the door cards , Its the application of masking tape that's the problem...

Hi resunoiz ,

Whilst i am a capable DIY woman mechanic and i think i carry myself around a car quite well, I think that i have
to draw a line when it comes to grinding off all the plastic grommet / fixings on the back to enable it all to come
apart and then putting it all back together using screws and washers.... Wouldn't be fair to any M3 / M3 owner... ;);).....

If you have any vids / pics of any other way then please post for the uneducated ( ME :) ).....

Thanks anyway for the reply..

unfortunately, no specific vid. I remember I removed less than 4 screw each side then it popped up :)

That's a shame as according to everyone else it's all about drilling off the heads of the plastic rivets and re attach using screws and washers....

mine had torx screw, 2000 320ci conv. but maybe not all the same.
but made this thing on the rear ofthe seats: nothing hard to do ;)
tape does stick to it, it probably wasnt sticking because you had just sprayed/cleaned the area. i literally masked off the leather and sprayed the plastics a few weeks ago. give it another go mate

Just bough 3 new rolls of tape, Scotchbrite multi surface ( blue ), 1 day only heavy duty ( yellow ) and aluminium tape..... ALL failed..

I only want to paint the lower part of the plastic trim where the speaker is....... What tape did you use ??

I'm pulling my bldy hair out
Chawewan..
I painted mine to look like it was 2 tone rather than all gray
See less See more
Ive used blue masking tape, the cream looking masking tape and ive also used duck (duct?) tape. I had to get creative with the tape i had left before i went to the store and got more (the cream colored one)

The woofer cover just pops off from the outside. Not sure about the midrange.
Thx for the replys,

I had my husbands friends all come to have a look and we were all in agreement that no tape was going to stick to the leather so we bought thin cardboard and forced it in to the seem between the leather insert and plastic trim then bent it over and wrapped over the cardboard with shrink wrap as i only wanted to apply the vinyl spray to the bottom trim ( speaker area )..... there you go - Bush doctor tactics and know how...lmfao....
Fck knows why no tape would work after leather cleaner, washing it with warm soapy water and 50/50 vinegar / water mix, all i can say is the old bloke that owned this car before me must of used some serious cleaning / conditioning juice that's soaked in to the top coating..... Sorry no pics of the masking effort as i am too embarrassed.... Thank god i don't carryout work like this on the brakes or engine.

Cheers
