Manual Transmission Fluid Type

I hate digging up old threads, but as I am the OP, I guess I'll let it slide :hi:

I'm finally getting around to changing out the manual transmission fluid and can't find the capacity ANYWHERE. Even the owner's manual doesn't list the capacity as it says it's a "Lifetime Fluid." I know I just need to fill it until it slowly drips out of the fill hole (being level of course), but for purchasing purposes, how much does it take?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm beginning to feel some "notchy-ness" in my 1st and second gear, so I'm going to replace the fluid next week. I've heard of people using Royal Purple and saying it is a bad choice, so I'm looking to use the tried-and-true Redline fluids.

Here is my question. Some people recommend the MT-90 (along with pelicanparts.com) while I read a lot of places that say the 75W90 GL-5 Gear Oil is correct. The Redline application guide recommends D4 ATF and doesn't even list the MT-90!

What have you guys had success with?

Mango, while we are on topic. What are the common spots for the 5 speeds to leak? My fluid appeared original. I got less then 1/2 quart out and it had some metal shavings. Transmission itself is fine,I didn't feel any big difference swapping the fluid w/ pentosin but lack of fluid drained concerns me.
no five speed thanks

Okay then it's the power steering system because your 5 speed manual doesn't connect to the radiator.

You can't look to see where it leaked out?

Everything is bone dry. I'm guessing that with a lack of fluid that it had in it may be its not reaching the point of escape it once had

An oil leak that big wouldn't really just disappear.

How much did you manage to fill it with?

I think I got less then 1/2 out and put about 1.25 back in. I'm planning on doing another drain and fill with my next oil change to see what I'm losing.
Car was level?

On a lift so yes. I was doing other repairs so the car got cool but I should have still gotten more then 1/2 quart out
so what your saying the power steering fluid goes to the radiator in two compression lines at the bottom of the radiator beside the frame rail just trying too get thing straight thanks
A ghost stole the fluid.

You have an automatic transmission. Those two lines with compression fittings go into a silver heat exchanger attached to the radiator. They circulate the automatic transmission fluid to share heat with the coolant to help stabilize the temperature of the automatic transmission fluid.
not to soud like a dick been driving car for years defiantly 5 speed
There is a separate cooling loop for the power steering system behind the radiator - see #10 in http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BM53&mospid=47712&btnr=32_0958&hg=32&fg=20 for reference. This is likely what is leaking on your car (as WDE46 already said). The power steering system in these cars uses ATF, so this is why the fluid looks and smells as it does.

Lmfao. This Is the best thread ever. Never have I seen members trying to prove the op on the transmission he has in his own car
