I am a former owner of a couple e46's (330 and a 328 ci), and may get back into an e46 M3.

Could someone be so kind as to give me the quick cliff notes on what changed in the M3 from '00 - '06? (more mechanically, and not the aesthetic stuff, unless it's important to note)

Meaning, should I be less (or more, maybe) inclined to pick up an earlier model ('01-03) vs. a later one? ('04-'06)

Any known TSBs or common problems?

Anything glaring that I should know about '01s?

thx a bunch for any info provided.

  • 2003.5, the E46 M3 received a minor climate control makeover and a minor bootlid makeover.
  • 2004, the E46 M3 received LED tail lights.
  • 2005, the E46 M3 received the ZCP option

...and yeah, follow the link above!

Minor correction. 2003.5 models first received LED tails.

Although not a style modification - don't forget that the early models (01's to some 03's) had rod end bearing recalls. If you pick an earlier model you need to know this was done.

My '03 had the rod issue; the motor blew up, and BMW replaced it under warranty. I believe that all ///M3's from 01-04 also have 100,000 mile powertrain/engine warranties.
