If you are going to do the labor yourself, then the cost can come down. The electronics can be tricky, but there are solutions for that as well (Wiring Specialties, PSI, Dakota Digital). If you are going to pay a shop to do it... choose wisely. I chose poorly, and the shop didn't deliver. A year later, I reclaimed my car, and took it to a different (much more reputable) BMW specialty shop. I'm already in for ~12k (car purchase and all the 'normal' maintenance and repair before starting the swap), and 18k from the first shop (whom I'll likely end up in court with). I expect the second shop to be an additional 15 to 20k. If you really love the car (I have three of them, and one of my son's also has one), then it can be worth it. I wanted something different/unusual, and a 'sleeper'.
If you are just looking for performance, go grab a C5 Corvette. It'll be far cheaper.
