Forgive me, as I'm new to the forum.

I've been searching through roughly 12 pages of lighting issue, LCM posts and while I found a great deal of solid advice, I am still left curious about my situation. - Full story to follow. - If you'd like to skip, then the short of it is: 2004 325Ci - driver's side halogen low out (no voltage to socket) ever since bringing the car to get all module software upgraded at local BMW dealership My mechanic validated grounds OK, battery OK, alternator OK. Both brights, fogs and the rain sensor work. Originally the car was a xenon build and whoever had it before me retrofitted halogens and removed all the xenon parts. The lighting module in my car currently: part# 532228427 (seems to be a xenon module) Can only get driver's side low to shine if I disconnect the LCM from the wire harness and reconnect it prior to turning the lights on.

I'm looking to reinstall a xenon setup, but for now will live with the halogens. I 'd appreciate insight on the best course of action to get that one bulb working permanently - as it was when I originally purchased the car. Can someone recommend either the appropriate halogen LCM (I've been to realoem.com, but their recommendation and my local dealership's along with a couple other online OE on-line parts sellers conflict with one another.)

I purchased a rebuilt 2004 325Ci about 2 months ago. I expected problems even after a smooth test drive. Now I did notice my light's tint seemed yellowish compared to a previous car I owned that was equipped with xenons. I suspected I got a car with halogens, which was OK considering what I paid.

More recently, around 3 weeks ago I elected to bring my car to a local BMW dealership just for a module update. At the time, I had no idea there was a lighting control module in these cars. When I got the car back a day later, all was good, until I turned on my lights to discover the driver's side low was out and I had a red driver's side warning light on the dash.

Shortly after, I run my VIN to produce a build sheet and find out my car was originally built with auto-leveling or auto-control xenons, fogs, rain sensors, and automatic lights. So I check my lights: low beam projector lenses, buuuut... no ballast, no igniters, and obviously no HID bulbs. OK, maybe I have a bad halogen bulb. I pull the bulb, and it looks good, so I swap it with the passenger side low and it lights on the passenger side, while my driver's side remains dark. Then I perform voltage check - no voltage to the socket.

I decide to replace my existing halogens with a nice set of brighter Sylvanias. Figuring it was a wiring issue, I ask my mechanic to trace the wiring, fix some minor issues, heat-shrink, etc, etc. Eventually he is able to get the light to shine on the driver's side. Only problem now is, the brake lights won't go out. He continues working out the wiring, I mention a few fuses to check - 35 I think was shot, replaced, and the brake lights started working properly again.

Now what occurs is: driver's side bulb won't light unless the LCM is disconnected from with wire harness and reconnected before switching the lights on (manual or auto-mode.) The LCM part # in my car is: 532228427, and it references LEAR ALC the labels. Brights, and fogs operate fine on both sides.

What's the best option to get that light working properly? I don't want to spend $300+ on a new LCM only to rip it out in a few months to return the car to a xenon build.

Again, any one with experience regarding the above, I'd appreciate your help.

Since your problem started after the software update I would go back to the dealership and ask them to figure it out. You don't need to change your LCM module if you go from halogens to HID or backwards, you can program the LCM with P.A. Soft easily.

OK... I wasn't sure if the variations of LCMs were hardware and software bound, or more open as you suggested. When i suggested to the service adviser that I suspected an issue with the LCM, that notion wasn't taken too seriously.

Thanks for putting me in the proper direction.

For what it's worth, I found out: By Keeping the LCM switch in auto-mode, the driver's side will light up without having to disconnect and reconnect the harness, regardless of shutting the car off for hours or not. Strange, but I'll take it for now.
