LED License Plate Lights - Recommendations?

13580 Views 14 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  ///Mark_D
One of my old LED license plate lights that I had gotten over 13 years ago from an old vendor burned out. Does anyone have a pair they like? Having a really hard time finding these online from anywhere other than just a few vendors.

Looking for something subtle and not too bright since some photos look high beams for your license plate

Are they super bright? Do you have any pics? I'm wondering if I can get them to be less bright by flipping them over and having the heat sink face down.
Here's what I found in my gallery https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=17RYw2iiSGiPwqApdoPSzXpBPNt2Yj54H.
I'm pretty sure you can turn it upside down to make it seem less bright as my old ones were loose and would turn on their own making one seem dimmer than the other
I have Genuine BMW ones that are great. But they probably only fit on E46s the CSL trunks.
I just bought these about a month ago and finally got around to installing them the other day.

Let me start out by saying that the bar over the license plate w/ the lights and trunk handle has been the single largest recurring pain-in-the-ass-part to deal with on the entire car over my past 8 years of ownership. I've probably had to remove it 6 or 7 times now.

Basically it started with inoperable lights due to corrosion issues on the bulb holder tabs. I initially fixed that with some sand paper and some dielectric grease to try and prevent further corrosion.

After about a year the actual wiring to the bulb holder tabs also started corroding and the housings above each light were melted. I rewired everything using the existing bulb tabs and reinforced the tab mounting with screws.

After that I think it was more heat and wire corrosion issues that finally pushed me to replace the tabs that mount the festoon type bulbs and replace with spade connectors and direct wire LED type bulbs.

The LED bulbs I've dealt with are pretty shitty in terms of resistance to moisture, so I've gone though a few sets that have failed due to water collecting inside the bulb housing near the lenses.

On this last effort to finally fix this issue once and for all, I completely replaced all the wiring for the lights one more time inside the bar to replace any damaged sections from heat and water related corrosion. I also added some new waterproof weatherseal to prevent water from entering the bulb housings.

For the LED bulbs, I disassembled each from the clear lens and completely coated the circuit boards in clear epoxy to waterproof it from the elements. I direct wired spade terminals to attach to the LED panels so I can easily replace them if they decide to fail again. I also globbed on a bunch of dielectric grease at the terminals to prevent corrosion there.

As far as the light output goes on this recent batch from amazon, they are super bright (almost too bright for my taste) but at this point I just want them to work.

I have the same LED housings as you and I also had the same corrosion issue. I had to replace my bulb holders eventually inside my handle assembly as the tabs just corroded away. The problem is in the gasket for the trunk handle. Water is getting into the housing through the failed gasket. Grab a new one from ECS Tuning or FCP Euro and you should not have anymore issues with water getting inside the housing. Less than $15.

Here's an update with a photo I took this morning. These lights are super bright and throw a pretty good amount of light on the ground in addition to the plate itself. The snow on the ground probably makes it look even more noticeable than if it were on bare pavement. It's kind of overkill with the amount of light. With all the issues I've had with these lights burning out though I'm just happy they are still working.
