Leaking rack and pinion

307 Views 15 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  A930rocket
My rack and pinion is leaking from the driver side. I see most have the same leak in the same spot. Want to get opinion on good replacement? I didn't want to do aftermarket, so I bought a rebuilt/remanufactured one. It was a good price too. Got it from AutoZone. It's a OEM ZF unit. I'll post some pics of the item later. Has anyone had any experience with AutoZone remanufactured rack and pinion?

I have the same issue. Looking to change mine and read your post. It is limited life time warranty so you can't lose.
Let me know how it turns out.

It's heavily painted. I would prefer if it has just cleaned. I'm not able to see the color of the tag. The one I currently have is yellow tag. Any recommendations on how to remove the paint on the tag.

Will this work? I was finally able to position it correctly.

It should as long as you get the tool lever over the top of the bolt
It will not come out. I think the tool will break. Look how much I threaded it and it still in same location.

Put a socket and breaker bar on the bottom of the the tool bolt and apply as much force as you can. Be prepared for a loud noise when it comes loose. You won't hurt the tool or the car. I assume the wheel is off the car.

Looks like this is my option. It won't come out.

If only it was this simple.

Every time I've had to do this I used a breaker bar and socket and it has never failed. I also have the tool you have. Go for it and let us know the results. Be prepared for a really loud noise when it lets go.
Sorry. Looks like plan B. You are going to have to cut it off. I would use a reciprocating saw with or course a metal blade. You are still going to have to get that bolt out of the knuckle. Hopefully you won't have to take the knuckle off.

What kind of blade should I use?
Get a BFH and knock on the sides. Then hit the top of the tie rod, and it will pop out. Keep repeating both steps until it pops out.

Or, hit the sides and bang away on the pickle fork with the BFH. Keep repeating both steps until it pops out.
