I have a 2001 330CI with SP. It's time for me to get some new tires. I was wondering, the rear tires are 245/40-17, could I get tires that are 255/40-17, or maybe even 265/40-17? Would they fit? Would they look ok, or is this simply the wrong thing to do? Thanks for your help.

Yes the 255/40-17 tires will fit on the 8.5" rims just fine (not even a stretch). I don't recommend 265/40-17 though. One, you'd be changing the overall diameter too much. Secondly, you'll get massive understeer (as if there weren't enough already).

I replaced the stock 245/40/17 with 255/40/17 and everything works fine, if not better. The new tires (Pirelli PZero's) have an overall diameter that better matches the stock fronts, and they fill out the SP rims better (more protection from curbs). I'm still not even close to rubbing.
