Is software really worth the $$?

So last week I went and got the Dinan exhuast and CAI installed on my 328i. I was supposed to get the software done but the place I went to had faulty chips. So no software was installed. I noticed a definate increase in performence. Which leads me to ask without the software what am I missing?
