from the 323 models on up people have been able to swap in M3 engines
I'm not sure how different the 318 and the 320's are though.

Yes its possible. its a lot of work. you need new gearbox, drive shaft, gear linkage. everything. new dme and ews, wiring harness. quite simply everything. new suspension, brakes, sway bars.

If you are not mechanically skilled. do not do this.

It was a rather popular thing to do with 318s especially for the guys who went to drivers schools. They generally had a lot more money then they needed and found something to do with it... :)

One of the Mid-Ohio HPDEs I went to, had like 3 - 318 ti's with M3 engines.

I would ask a garage to do this. I would choose a 2.8 L or 3.0 L engine.

Choose the 2,8 liter as conversion to electronic throttle is a pain in the ass. And requires more wiring and the colours are not the same. i did this to mine and i regret not taking the 2,8 liter instad of the electronic 2,5 liter

I don't know where b-river is, though it sounds very nice, but depending, it might become even more difficult for you.

One thing I didn't read in this thread is the cost of doing this and since you said you'd ask a garage to do it, I'll say this:

By the time you've put in new engine, paid the shop, and dealt with the months you spend without your car, the year you'll spend after getting it back working out the kinks, the $$$ you'll have spent...you might just be better off selling what you have, working and saving, and then buying the car you want.

And then, even then, OP, you probably will still think your BMW slower than many cars you wish it was faster than.

You're planning on spending more on an engine install than your car is worth, and make your car less attractive to all but the most knowledgeable buyers...should you ever decide to sell. I know I wouldn't consider buying a car when I hear a guy dropped a new motor in, unless that guy is Enoc, Kalim or Mk, or one of very, very few people around.

I'm thinking of Humpty Dumpty now for some reason!:lmao:

hi dmax,
you're right. It was just an idea and I was hoping it was less difficult. b-river is in Mauritius and it is even more difficult to do this here. Anyway the engine of my car is almost dead with 40% less power and I have to change this. I am thinking to swap for a used one but same model with low mileage or to rebuilt the engine. What do you think. It is a nightmare for me to import all the necessary spare parts. Maybe it is better to buy a complete engine.
