I tried searching the forums but couldn't find a definitive answer to what Iam trying to do. Since my car is already prewired for the cd changer, I was wondering if I can use the Alpine CHM-S620 unit from my wrecked E36 and simply plug it into my new car. Besides the changer I also have the soudgate interface from the E36. Is there a DIY that anyone can recommend?

Should be the same doing an install in an '04 as it would be in any other e46.

You can do this, but you need an Alpine>BMW adapter. BMW/ALP DMX V.1 will work and possibly a bus adapter (depend if your changer is mbus or AI-net)
