Hi all fans! :)

This is my first post, so bear with me.

I have a BMW e46 330CI Cabrio SMG from 2003

I have some plans to install a new aftermarket radio (Pioneer AppRadio 4 - SPH-DA120)

So therefore i have some questions for you :)

Right now, i have all the original equipment:
- 2 DIN Navigation/radio with Casette tape & with 6 steps CD box back at the trunk
- Harman Kardon stereo (with Amp.) with subwoofer
- Steering Wheel Control

1. Question:
which wire harness adapter do i need? There is 3 types. Or do i even need one of these?:
- 17 pin connector http://www.ebay.com/itm/PC2-05-4-BM...890?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3a87d1c952
- 40-pin connector http://www.ebay.com/itm/PC2-75-4-BM...683?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3cd8f05863
- Wire Harness with RCA cables http://www.ebay.com/itm/PC9-405-BMW...063?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2a1f28677f

2. Question:
Which Steering Wheel Control adapter do i need?
My App Radio 4 has a jack input for steering wheel connection, so is it like this one?: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PIONEER-C...ad-DS-BM003-/270895600272?hash=item3f12a2d290

3. Question:
Do i need to rewire some cables when i have the Harman Kardon system, or the 16:9 Navigation radio, because when i see the factory radio cable (for the standard 16:9 Navigation radio), it looks like this:

- I also read something with the RCA Voltage etc.?

4. Question:
When i removed the factory Navigation radio, and turn on the ignition (or start the car) the radio/tuner is still playing. Then i think, it's because of the Tuner that are located somewhere at the trunk or?
- but when i have to connect the aftermarket App Radio 4, how do i connect the radio/tuner with the wire? And does the Tuner and App radio musik overlap each other?

I have cutted the AC vents/duct so the new aftermarket App Radio 4 will fit in now (does not looks like a million :) More picture is comming)

Cutting the plastic AC vents/duct

Maked a case, bechause you have to close the AC vents/duct again.
!!! PICTURE COMMING TODAY !!!

Could you guys please help me in this situation, because i really want to install this asap, and also make a usefull guide with all pictures step by step to you later :)

I have searched in the forum and find too many "diffrence" solutions/fixes how to install a aftermarket radio.

NOTE: Yes i know a lot of things about stereo/radio's etc., but i havn't tried/seen these cable before, so i need experience from some who has done this, or can give me the correct wiring diagram for my BMW 330CI Cab. SMG

Thanks all, hope you can answer some or all the questions :D !

Best Regards:

as for wiring up the headunit.. it is semi plug and play. you will hard wire the e46 adapter to the pioneer headunit harness by matching up wire colors for the most part (twist and tape, solder, crimp connect, there are many ways to do this). once those are connected, the harness you wired up will plug right into the OEM harness in your car. not sure about the steering wheel controls.

Also be aware that the radio you chose will not 'just fit' in. You will need to cut the a/c ducts and remold them and then either rework or eliminate the duct controls that are behind the unit.

Search 'double din install' in the stereo section of this forum for the step by step instructions.

Most people on these forums use something like this
http://www.pac-audio.com/productDetails.aspx?ProductId=210
for the steering controls.

Thanks for reply.

hopefully i thing there is following a adapter from the "controller box" to a jack cable so it fits right back in the Pioneer radio?
(You can also see the new updated link of the steering wheel control adapter)

#4 Thanks for reply.
Have you done the AC ducts cutting before? Is it easy to modify? Or do you now the dimensions from the Double Din panel to the AC duct?

Hope you can help me.

JasonLI25t:
I have updated the topic, and it seems like the OEM harness connector is diffrence. Maybe the 40 pin, or flat pin harness connector are at the trunk?

I have now cutted and modified the AC vent/duct :)

I had the same connectors in mine. The 17 or 40 pin connector you are looking for is in the trunk, drivers side behind the panels. You will need to run a new harness from there to your new head unit. I purchased an iem style unit and 6 meter harnesz. Note: the harnes was just long enough. Also, dont be afraid to dismantle your backseat and panels.

Hi Johnboy32

I have read that the:
17 pin old generation connector is in cars from 1998 ro 2001
40 pin new generation connector is in cars from 2002 to 2006

Like you said, the connectors are located in the trunk (also find that out yesterday :) ) drivers side.

But do you know which harness i need to buy, bechause i have seen some with steering wheel control extension cable and also with a diffrent cable at the end to the radio? it doesn't looks like a normal stick to the radio:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0BW02G8930
Or is this harness for the dynavin radio's?

there is also this cable, but is not the 17 or 40 pin:
http://www.jandtdistributing.com/products/fakra-cable-kit

Maybe you know the harness with the 40 pin connector i need to buy?

Another question:
Am i able to use the factory HK speakers since the speakers are connected to the amp? How to connect this? should it be connected to the RCA outputs on the Pioneer radio, because i think it would be a problem to connect it to the 50 watt. channel on the pioneer?

Or do i need a new amp. to the speakers and use the RCA output?

Hope you understand my advanced questions and you could help me out :)

I purchased an Eonon d5150 and the wiring harness at the same time. Note that the wiring harness does not have an antenna extension so you will need to source that seperate. The HK system i beleive uses 2 to 4 ohm where most off the shelf systems are 8. You may want to consider a line leveling device. Personally my next step is ditching the eonon and bypassing the hk system and install something a bit more conventional. I think the wiring harness uses a more standard color code so you should just need to match colors to your new unit.

I also see that i need a extended antenna cable.
But do you have a link to the harness kit?
I am still a little bit confused with the HK system. Do you also know what i need to this? I think a link could be helpfully :)

I really hope you can help me :) Thanks a lot!

Hi Sandorr

Not yet, but still searching for a solution.

Now i have removed the side cover in the trunk to find out what i have.

I find out that i needed the new 40 pin harness connector and not the 17 pin old.

Also regarding the steering wheel adapter, i have now bought this on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/270895625368?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
So then i only need a long extension cable for the steering wheel adapter from the trunk to the radio.

I think i will try cut and use the factory harness wires, so i don't need to install a new harness kit from the trunk to the radio, but i think it will require some labels, because the factory wire colors are now the same as the adapter.

But i am not sure about the HK system, how i need to connect that.

I will upload some pictures of the trunk later :)

I really hope some can help me how to connect the HK amp/stereo to the Radio :)

Now i know that 1 and 7 on the blue factory harness plug is +12 V and ignition:

1 = red/Brown wire = Ignition
7 = red/green wire = +12 V.

Does anybody know the stereo wires? I still need help to find out how to connect the factory Harman Kardon stereo/Amp. To my Pioneer radio

This harness is only for sat/nav
Hi sandorr,
I know that, but if the stereo wires is is in these cable, i could cut the factory harness and use this instead of installing a new harness from trunk to radio.

So i need to know if somebody know which wire is for the stereo?

And i still need to know if i could connect it to the radio amp or Line out (RCA cables)

Please help me
