Using such a method to add refrigerant will work in a pinch, but the right way to do it is to evacuate the system and refill to the precise quantity of refrigerant indicated on the label under the hood. R134a is sensitive to quantity of charge and just reading pressures is not accurate enough. So, you might notice the difference in the deep south like Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, etc.
