Hello there.
I am trying to identify the following element (BMW e46 320d - year 2001)
it sits under the hood, right side, slightly after the head light

1. What is this element / unit

2. Why does it get so hot? (around 160 Fahrenheit or 70c)

3. Should I replace it, how much would such a unit cost?

Thanks.

I believe thats the heater core valve. It sends coolant to the heater core when you want heat. Probably why it gets hot? And if you don't think so follow the hoses see where they goeses. Might not be the valve I mentioned, thats just my best guess.

its the heater control valve. coolant flows thru it so it gets pretty hot.
