So to start off, I have a 2001 330 convertible Auto. It's in decent condition at around 135k miles. Just need to deal with this evil upper radiator hose :evil: that won't seat on properly, but then it will be good to go again.

My old car was a manual, and nowadays I'm really missing to fun of rowing my own gears. I'm highly considering selling my auto 330 to go buy a manual one.

Do you all have any suggestions on how to go about this?
1. Selling and then buying a manual.
2. Trading with someone (not sure if this is common or likely)
3. Manual conversion (I'm handy with working on cars, but I think the parts would end up costing too much)

Personally, as an enthusiast, I don't see the point of owning a small (or even medium-sized) BMW with an automatic trans. 7-series, sure, but a 3-series? :dunno: To each their own though.

To your question: By far the easiest route would be to sell yours and buy a manual-equipped E46. I just posted one local to you in the "Craigslist FINDS" thread. Would you be looking for a vert or are you open to a coupe, sedan or wagon?

I actually ended up being talked into buying an automatic at the dealership. It was listed online as a manual, and when I got there and found out it was auto and was about to walk out. But they slashed the price so hard I couldn't refuse haha. I'd prefer a convertible, but I'm open to a coupe with a sunroof.

I think tons of people end up with autos because manuals are just hard as **** to find. There are basically none within a reasonable distance for me.

this. and then people wonder why we ask a premium when it comes to selling time.

Ok, thanks guys. I guess I'll get to work detailing her up and get ready to sell my baby. Even though it'll be hard. It was the first car I bought with my own money lol.

not sure if your financial situation allows you the luxury of keeping auto until you find the right manual? If so find the right car and then sell your automatic. otherwise you may be anxious to buy any ole manual instead of a good deal.

I agree, manual in a convertible just feels so much better. the way driving was intended for the enthusiast.

I've been debating selling my manual not because it's a bad car, but I just don't have the financial capability to keep up on the maintenance. I will say however you get really good gas mileage with a manual. I just had 300 miles on 3/4 of a tank! However, When you go to buy a manual look for if the car will grab in the highest gear. If it sputters and dies or just doesn't roll then the clutch is bad. Also pay attention to thumping when you shift, this is more common in manuals then automatics but means it has a bad carrier bearing which is around $500 to fix if you don't know how to do it yourself.

I was in the same boat. Sold a ZHP with a manual and missed the car. So I bought a ZHP with an auto (but got a smokin deal on it).

Drove it about 4 months and then swapped in a 6-speed. I spent about $3,500 on the swap all said and done but it could be done for $3,000 if I planned a little better. But even with the swap I'm still in this 2nd ZHP for less than I sold the 1st one for. I just miss the Alcantara interior.... But it was still a fun project that I got done over the course of 2 weekends.

So long story short, it's all about $$ - if manuals in your area are demanding a premium it may be more cost effective to do the swap.

Quoted for truth, which is a reason i'm so heartbroken that Audi does not offer manuals in the S3 or S4 (starting w/ this year's model).

Between that and the fact that BMW no longer offers a naturally-aspirated I6, the German enthusiast landscape is definitely going downhill.

I mean, the 228i got rave reviews in the latest issue of Road & Track, but I just couldn't bring myself to consider one with a 4-banger.
