i bought it at sharper image. went home, read manual, didnt change any settings. then i pluged it into my car, i dunno if i mounted it in the correct location. i mounted it to the right of the rear view mirror, is that good?

then i went for a little test drive. i pulled into a shopping center and x and k bands started going off, no cops around. then i got on the streets and x band went off a few times.

so what should i do? should i change any settings? the location? and what do x and k bands mean

Sounds normal. X and K can be triggered by auto door openers and alarms. Swith to city mode that should reduce some of that. I just leave mine in auto and got to know the spots that the X and K goes off so I don't worry about police in those certain spots. However always be careful in areas you aren't familiar with!

you can set filters for no X in City mode... and you can change the display so that it makes like a "knight rider" moving dot instead of the default "AUTO". You can also make it display the voltage of your car as the display!

There are many settings you can select.... it's all up to you.... Guess you should re-read the manual :) :lmao:

I've had my 8500 since 2001 and it's great

Normal... your location selection is excellent.
X&K are often falsed by motions sensors like the doors at shopping centers and gas stations. you can adjust the sensitivity in the city band. But be sure to switch back to HWY if you are going to be pushing the speed. Better safe than $orry

I have had mine for six months, has been great!!

i was just about to by V1 but i could not find justice, but i have been greatly protected by the 8500.

So far its been great, works very well and has been giving plenty time to react, has very good rage.

Yes it does have some false alrms but it normal with every detector.

I still have yet to program it to my likings but it has been great so far, no tickets!!

its already paid for its self, even this morning!!

On a scale of 1-10 ,10 being best, it gets 9.5!!

Good luck

Cough v1 .... cough ..... :eeps: :eeps: ... jk, still an awesome detector. I have problems all the time with the v1 going off next to shopping centers and banks. Usually K & X. Next to the rear view mirror is a good place with good visibility. Remember, the higher in the car the better!

love my 8500, keep it on HIGHWAY, tho, i got a ticket with it on Auto, in NJ from goddam Xband radar.... it has never once failed me in highway mode... MillsBims will attest to that, we were almost busted in NJ by a moving trooper with Xband, but i was able to ID it and slow, as he passed us by

enjoy it, and post pics if u decide to hardwire it

-brendan

EDIT- I found that the readings were too hard to view easily when mounted to the Right of my mirror, it is now mounted to the left, with the cord going around the mirror and down to lighter (hardwire coming soon enough)

also, if u didnt change any settings, u still have it set to track one radar source (the most powerful source says Escort), if u use the Expert Meter, u will be able to track up to 8 sources at the same time (2 K, 2 Ka, and 4 X) and see the intensity of EACH source at the same time. its so great (and its something that the Escort has over the V1's "bogey counter")
