Yup, that's correct.. 6hrs for an install. I got mine replaced a few months back. The bill was $600.

 

I replaced mine last year; a bmw tech on m3 forum walked me through the process step-by-step. Exhaust system and transmission cross-member have to come off - this will lower the tranny enough so that you can get to the starter mounting bolts from under the car. Intake manifold also has to come off so that you can disconnect the cables from the starter. Let me know if you decide to do this on your own & I'll send you the pics and more detailed directions.

 

I have decided to replace my started and save some money. Local dealer is quoting my $1300 to do it.
