According to wikipedia, the 5-speed manual gearbox weighs 39kg or about 86 lb.

 

The ZF 6MT that I'm swapping in weighed 93lbs on my bathroom scale.

 

Interesting, I keep reading people wanting 5 speeds for racing due to weight but at a mere 7lbs difference the 6 speed is definitely the better choice.

 

Not bad, but IIRC they are heavier in the back... Easy to manage though. Try wrestling an Audi B7 A4 AWD tranny out and in.

 

Doing my clutch in 2 weeks and decided to pick up a transmission jack off Craigstlist, just to be safe. I had no problem laying under the diff to remove it last year and it was quite heavy, but not as heavy as the transmission. That said, I think the transmission will require some jiggling, etc. to get it off so I feel better having a jack. Also figure I can sell it for what I paid for it.

 

I've done the whole transmission bench press thing before. It was no damn fun when I was young, def not going to mess with it now!

 

A standard trolley jack works just fine for both the trans and diff.

I drilled a couple of holes in mine, and run a pair of bolts in a bit to make a fork.
But that's overkill.

raising the jack with your feet is easy.
Lowering it, it's easier with your shoes off.

20lbs is significant and 6th is just an economy gear. If you daily it and did real mileage it's nice to have for ~5% better mileage.

On the converse side if you had to add weight anywhere in a car the transmission location is just about as ideal as it gets. That being said if you’re stripping the car and racing 20lbs is a lot.

96lbs is also a lot to wrestle with under the car!

Does anyone have any idea of the weight of an Xi transmission including the transfer case on the rear?
