E36 M3's were offered in auto every year of their priduction in the US i think
Yup, just the E36 models. The automatics on those had like 3 different driving modes (economy, sport, and manual) sort of like what you see in todays steptronic models. It was a true automatic with a torque converter and the 0-60 was like 1.2 seconds slower than its manual counterpart.

Only E36 SMG and E46 SMG II
E36 SMG never made it to the United States.

On E36 M3's, I think that in '95 you could get a 5 speed auto in the coupe, and then they pulled the auto from the coupe and offered it only on the 4 door, and maybe the cab (not sure) through the end of the model run.

I know it was offered in coupe in 95. And then in the sedan in 96 and 97. But I'm not sure it was offered at all in 98 or 99. When I bought my M3 (manual) in 97, dealers around here had 6-8 auto 4-door M3s each on their lots. So I don't think it was such a big success for them.

Why the hell anyone wanna buy M3 with Auto? Whole point of getting M3 is the sports car, not a bumber car.

I thought the 4 door E36 M's were all auto? Too bad cuz it was even lighter than the coupe and with a stick could really be fun. I've driven an both E36 M's and the auto was definitely slower.

The 4 door M3 was actually a huge hit in the US market. For the two years it was offered here (1997 and 1998) it outsold both coupes and convertibles.
1997 - 4dr: 4,535
coupe: 3,405
1998 - 4dr: 3,225
convt: 2,876
coupe: 2,661

Where'd you get those numbers. I was just having an argument about whether the 4 door M3s were all that rare. I see a lot of them around here. Would like to be able to back it up.
