how is a burned clutch or busted engine?

1049 Views 13 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  323and330ci
does anyone know how i can tell if the clutch is messed up or engine injury ?

today went and drag this ford thunderbird sc V6, beat him by just a head. not that much :(
thought i would have done better.

now the car stink like hell seems like something is burned, not sure where it comes from ? does anyone have any idea where it could come from ? is it the clutch or the engine?

i read before someone over reved the engine, it happen to me today too. i rev over 7000 rpm on first gear, and second gear went in, but the car didn't move, so i thought the rpm was low i keep on pushing, when i look at the rpm i notes that i was keep on reving 7000 rpm . so i stoped and pulled over. when the engine calm down, then it went back to normal. i have a 330ci not sure if something broke when i was on 7000rpm range. ??

do we have a safety spare once we over rev the engine and the transmission lock by itself ? it seems like it happen to me, i could shift in gear, but it had no grip .

i could drive the car, shifting is fine, drove on high way it's fine, no weird sound, but it's just the smell that make me feel like i burned the engine. is that normal smell after drag racing?

You definately burned the clutch. No need to be revving that high when you drop the clutch. And it is most likely on take off, not between gears that you cooked the clutch.
7K clutch drop?? April fools everyone!

April fools is over
its not a april fool, i'm serious. i did mentioned before about racing this ford thunderbird SC. so finally i got the chance to do it, well i won only half meter from him, not that much i thought 330ci could have done better, he got a good pull on second gear it's a auto too.

we raced 3 times to see if the result was accurate, so first pull i reved around 5000-5500rpm, once i drop the 1st gear the car spun on me, so the rev meter went all the way to 7000rpm because the car keep on spinning and i stayed there for few second too, i didn't pay attention how high i was reving. so when i drop to 2nd gear , the gear was in , but no grip at all . when i look at the rev meter i saw at 7000rpm range, right away i let go of the gas, the car rulled up a little i pulled over, once i pulled over the heavy burned smell. first i thought i fried the engine because 2nd gear was in, but no grip !!

when the rpm droped, then it went back to normal, does anyone know if that have to do with some safety transmission unlock when its to high reving ??

until today i still can smell the burn inside the car when i have the fan on . does anyone know if that smell is normal and will it go away after a while ?

today when i went to work (i work with this guy that i raced), when i enter the building some of my colleague told me that he keep on telling others that he smoked me !!!
dam we had a big argument, he said i lost because of the first race he said it's my fault for not able to handle the shifting, and then i asked him what about the 2nd and 3rd race, i smoked him, he said it doesn't count .
talk about one big @ss MOTER F!OCKER..........
that is not the pissed off part !!
he said we had a deal that HE WON !!!
i asked him, how the hell can we have a deal that you won when my car was a quarter car length. on that second i just wanted to punch him down !! argg..... :ben: :ben: :ben: :ben: :ben:

i just don't understand how a person can actually talk **** right infront of another person's face and BS that much !
i know all this sound very childish, but i think this is a principle issue and it's not a car issue anymore. me and him work together in a workshop .now i have to face this stupid lier everyday !!

NO WAY I WOULD CHOOSE HIM AS MY TEAM MATE IN FUTURE !

sorry for the lengthy letter..

Based on your description, your engine is fine. You did not over rev it. Sounds like this is what happened.

Revved way too high to drop the clutch. Your tires were probrably spinning out like crazy. When you tried to shift it into 2nd gear while your car is still revving at redline, your clutch couldn't grab so you basically burned the sh*t out of it.

The smell will eventually go away but your clutch will never be the same after a beat down like that. :ben:
You should not drop the clutch higher than 3500 or so in a 330. 4000 is a good max for a 325. You are smelling the sweet smell of toasted clutch.

You should not have been racing him, but you'd have done one heck of a lot better is you'd launched lower and not toasted your clutch. Your clutch was probably slipping for the second and third races.
7k is ok, it can handle it. but i'm not sure how many times ur clutch can be dropped from 5k with0out damage..
if your gonna race, drop around 2700 or else you will spin like a mother fukker, 2700 should give you a good jump
o yeah, 4000 is way to high to drop a 325, you'll spin and look like a retard, i wouldnt venture above 3000 if racing. maybe 4000 works for your Xi but not for 2 wheelers, we'll just strip our tires...

Having never clutch dropped a RWD 325, I'll take your word for it. :) You've probably seen the wet autox pics in my sig... I was dropping at 4000 in the rain, on all seasons. :p No wheel spin. :banghead:
my friend did a like 4k rev drop in his modded rx7, he lost traction and boost spiked to 20 psi, popped his engine

after about 50k, sounds like time for a new engine for that rx7 ne ways!

you guys are right about it, i just find out that if i rev to high, then the clutch doesn't have enough power to grip the flywheel, so while i was still in gear it was actually sliping, thats why there are still this bad smell. it never happened to me before this time i made a big mistake is because i had to heavy foot on the gas pedal, it was a while ago i drove the car .

i test drove it on highway , the clutch is back to normal again, i asume the clutch is a little worn out now, but that is not a big matter , at first i was just a little worry that i toasted the engine.

i did notes the 2nd and 3rd race was a little bad, i didn't pull on him that well, probably the clutch was overheated??
