Hey folks, So this is my first post, and I didn't think it was going to be a review of something that I hate, but here we go.
I have an 03 325i- no other mods other than a UUC lightweight flywheel, and hotchkiss swaybars (so nothing that changes noise from stock).

After reading endlessly, and watching every youtube video in existence, I decided to say @#$% it and go get my muffler deleted. To keep your attention please read the following: I HATE it.

I may take some heat for saying this, but it honestly has to be one of the cheesiest most idiotic sounds I have ever heard. Here is my description:
You start the car, and yea it sounds all throaty and gurgley, but it's also pointlessly loud (yes I knew it would be louder this is what I wanted). When the car warms up it chills out a bit.

So you start driving away, and whenever you go near the throttle it BARKS, but not in a good way. Its just a droning farty bark noise that immediately goes right into your sinuses and buzzes interior trim. Then on part throttle, around 2-4000 rpm, it actually sounds ok, but still not a sweet sound, just a throaty bark (I repeat, NOT in a good way).

Now here's the part that really pisses me off... When you go WOT and climb above 4000 rpm, any benefit of deleting your muffler disappears and it gets quieter. The loud throaty sound just gives way to a sound that is closer to "vibration" than exhaust. Not only that but the drone of it is just loud enough to cover up the great sound that the inline 6 makes at the headers.

Oh, and by the way, yes it does drone, yes it does yes it does. Unless you are super gentle with the throttle, and keep it at just the right engine speed, there is a low rumble from the back end that does not sound like an "exhaust note" it sounds like flatulence.

This delete was done correctly, with proper hangers, good welds etc. Yes everything else under the car is proper. No I'm not getting any unnecessary vibrations from somewhere else. Everything is as it should be.

I have heard many e46 exhaust notes, and currently, mine is the worst. I have a friend with a 330 whose muffler delete sounds not too bad. From the outside anyway.

The whole thing said and done was 100 bucks. So not too expensive of a mistake. But now I am going to go exhaust shopping and do this properly.

There are obviously many people out there who enjoy this sound, and to each his own. But my opinion is very much that this mod sounds unrefined and douchey.

Rant over.

Edit: I have installed a magnaflow muffler, check out these videos to get a feel for what it sounds like.

I love a good honest thread like this every once in a while...

It's refreshing.

PS, look into the Magnaflow full cat-back 16533, it will provide what you're looking for.

Any chance I could just install the muffler from that system?
For the most part, Magnaflow mufflers sound the ~same. So yes, you could easily install a Mag. muffler, the key is buying the closest fitting universal Magnaflow you can buy.

Go to their website & pick out 2 or 3 that you think will work, I'll then give you my opinion if it's great or if there's something better.

So I have 2" in and out I believe? How about these?
http://www.magnaflow.com/automotive-performance/mufflers/straight-through/5-x-11-oval/products/

Or something here? http://www.magnaflow.com/automotive-performance/mufflers/mufflers-with-tips/5-x-8-dual/products/

( I guess I would need a y pipe before these?)

I don't think I necessarily want a "deep throaty" sound. I want something that gets louder above 4000 rpm and that I can hear with the windows down.

OP, I'm confused by your bold statement above, please confirm that you exhaust looks like the pic below.

There are so many misunderstandings about what an exhaust system is and what it does there is no way in hell I would ever enter into a discussion about what works and what doesn't. But I will give you this so that you can stop the "drone" if that is what you want to do. This is real and it works to stop drone.

If you want to know what really makes more power or how exhaust systems really work, do you own research. You will find real (true) information and it probably won't fit in well with what you find in most forums.

I don't care if it makes the car faster or not, I'm not driving a street car without a muffler, haha. OP, you could not have said it better, nothing but drone and noise. You don't hear it at WOT as much because it is likely not resonating inside, just all out the back bothering adults counties over.

Universal magnaflo is a good sound from my experience, and very affordable. I drove my car straight pipe once when doing the exhaust, and was so embarrassed, I couldn't drive home slow enough.

Only 17 year old boys like removing the muffler, becuase they think "Hey, I want to make my car loud like one with a nice exhaust, but I cant afford it because I'm a kid. I know, just take the muffler off, its free!". Dumb logic, but no one ever said 17 year old boys make smart choices! haha

OP, I have to agree with you. I did the delete and placed back my muffler the next day. The drone was insane and it was just way too loud. The full exhaust system on my fiancees Jetta 1.8T isn't as bad as the muffler delete and that car is loud but in a good way.

Yes that is what mine looked like, before I went a head and deleted it like and idiot. I think I have 2" pipes? or are they 2.5"? And there are now just two straight pipes out the end.

What I meant was, would I need a muffler with 2 inlets? Is there any advantage/disdadvantage to using a y pipe and going to a single inlet?

Exactly. Turns out Im not a 17 year old, Im a big boy with a big boy job. I have headers planned out for this summer, so if I put money into the exhaust I wanted it to go there. This was purely to increase sound...I would love to go back and slap yesterday me in the face before I did this.

side note: anyone own a time machine?

I find custom exhaust work in a shop ends up being so much cheaper then buying made and fitted parts. The exhaust system to me changes and grows with the car, and after having fought the fight of fitting premade exhaust parts, it is so much easier to just have my exhaust shop weld it up. Bring donuts!

To be clear, I have researched exhaust systems extensively. Probably more misconceptions than an any other car area. My decision to do this was to only to make my car a bit louder, so I can hear it on the track with the windows down. Mission:failed.

The only real power modification exhaust wise on these cars that makes any real power, is headers. I'm waiting until my next emissions test before I do that though, So I have a year or so to sort out fitting cats down the line a bit, (instead of just going catless, because, you know, environment and stuff)

when I got my BMW and started seeing 'muffler delete' threads, my first thought was "why?"

I used to have a modded Saturn coupe, and I had to drive it around for a few weeks w/o a muffler; not fun. the only thing I like about it is the burble when you let off the gas and are coasting down. otherwise, too loud and droning.

I had a MkII GTi back in the day also, with some sort of aftermarket system on it. it only sounded good at certain rpm's; highway was a droning mess.

so I can't figure out why someone would want to make a refined touring sedan sound like a sh!tb0x.
