I can think of an improvement. Instead of a BIC pen and a bicycle pump, how about a tire valve and a small electric tire pump.

I'm certain the $7.49 Hand Pump from Harbor Fright will work just as well as would the cordless Air Pump that came with my queen size camping air mattress.
That beats the cheap cigar version.

If using an electric pump or compressed air, putting in a gas BBQ pressure regulator is a good idea to prevent blowing out any seals. From what I understand you don't want more than a couple psi.

You are correct. Vacuum at idle for M54 is 13-16 mbar, which is ~0.19-0.23 psi. A typical low pressure BBQ pressure regulator is preset to ~0.5 psi. That's sufficient pressure to push smoke out of cracks and leaks, yet not enough pressure to blow out seals.

Vacuum where? In intake boot maybe. Also CCV regulated vacuum should be around 10 mbar.
However, vacuum in intake manifold is quite severe. I've took measurement using a vacuum gauge connected to my M54. I got 0.7 bar vacuum reading at stable idle, decreased to 0.3 bar for a second with rapid throttle. I've got similar numbers on another car. The lowest idle vacuum I've ever seen was 0.1 bar on carburetor fed motorbike engine.

Still, I agree that low pressure is good enough for smoke to find a crack.

Yes, I'm talking about CCV regulated vacuum. I'm told that the BMW TIS states 13-16 mbar.
I just made one using the paint can method... basically a huge vape coil. Smoked my E46, E28 and another friends E46 recently. I no longer have an air compressor, so I use a bike pump.

I have a small electric pump that plugs into the cig lighter port. It takes about a half hour to completely fill a tire.
